The Civil Engineering Program Educational Objectives are:
Within a few years of graduation, alumni of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville undergraduate civil engineering program have distinguished themselves in the following areas:
- Professional practice in the civil engineering field.
- Leadership, in areas such as such as career advancement, community service, and professional society activity, and high standards for professional and ethical behavior.
- Licensure as professional engineers.
- Continuing education, having furthered their knowledge through formal graduate education and/or professional development opportunities.
To achieve the educational objectives, the department has outlined the following student outcomes:
By the time of graduation, undergraduate students in the Texas A&M University-Kingsville civil engineering program will demonstrate the following skills:
(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data, within a civil engineering context.
(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
(d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve civil engineering problems.
(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
(g) an ability to communicate effectively.
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of civil engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues.
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
Civil Engineering Program Criteria
According to ABET Criterion 9, CE graduates must be able to accomplish the following:
1. Apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, calculus-based physics, chemistry, and at least one additional area of science.
2. Apply knowledge of four technical areas appropriate to civil engineering.
3. Conduct civil engineering experiments and analyze and interpret the resulting data.
4. Explain basic concepts in management, business, public policy, and leadership.
5. Explain the importance of professional licensure.
