WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING

Michael James Flores Headshot

I left school in 2011, two classes short of graduating from Texas A&M University Kingsville, and built a successful career in the car business. In 2024, an email about the Javelina Relight Program gave me the push to return. With support from an incredible team, I finished my degree in December 2025. This experience reignited my passion for growth, and I am now pursuing my MBA while continuing to advance my career.

My Relight story began when I decided to return to college and finish the degree I once had to put on hold. I originally attended Texas A&M University-Kingsville through a TSTC-Harlingen partnership and was on track to graduate with my high school peers. During my final semester before student teaching, my daughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2019, forcing me to step away from school. After years focused on her treatment and recovery, I was finally ready to return. The Relight team guided me through the process and helped me re-enroll for Fall 2024. Despite another high-risk pregnancy during my final year, I graduated in Spring 2025 Summa Cum Laude with my children cheering me on from the stands.

I began my college journey at Texas A&M University Kingsville in 2008 as a teen mom, facing challenges that led to several unsuccessful attempts at continuing my education. Years later, when my daughter reached her junior year of high school, I realized I had two years to finish what I started. With the support of TAMUK staff and the Javelina Relight Program, I returned in Summer 2022 and earned my bachelor’s degree in August 2024, just two months after my daughter graduated high school. I continued my education and earned my Master of Social Work in May 2026. Today, I have the privilege of supporting students who are like me and have faced barriers throughout their educational journey, guiding them toward achieving their academic goals as the Academic Success Coordinator for the Relight Program while continuing my own educational journey toward a Doctorate in Clinical Social Work.
