Dr. Mario Carranza

Professor of Political Science

Dr. Mario Carranza received a Ph.D. in Political Science from University of Chicago in 1987. As a professor of Political Science in the Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, he teaches The Government and Politics of the United States, World Politics, International Relations, Comparative Politics, International Organization, International Law, and Nuclear Proliferation and U.S. Non-Proliferation Policies.  

Dr. Carranza has published three books: South Asian Security and International Nuclear Order: Creating a Robust Indo-Pakistani Nuclear Arms Control Regime (Farnham, UK: Ashgate, 2009), South American Free Trade Area or Free Trade Area of the Americas?: Open Regionalism and the Future of Regional Economic Integration in South America (Aldershot, UK: Ashgate, 2000), and Fuerzas Armadas y Estado de Excepción en América Latina (Mexico: Siglo Veintiuno, 1978).  Additionally, he has published refereed articles on nuclear proliferation in South Asia in The Nonproliferation Review, Asian Survey, International Politics, and Contemporary Security Policy. Dr. Carranza also conducts research on Mercosur (the Southern Cone Common Market) and regional economic integration in the Western Hemisphere and has published refereed articles in Latin American Perspectives, Latin American Politics and Society, Third World Quarterly, and Review of International Political Economy.  

Dr. Carranza served as the TAMUK Department of Political Science Chair from August 2005 - June 2008, and continues to regularly serve on a variety of department, college and university committees. He was also the recipient of the 2009 Best Publication Award in the College of Arts & Sciences, and of the 2003 Distinguished Research Award from the Javelina Alumni Association.
