About the Council

On March 22, 2024, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, James M. Palmer, announced the formation of the Artificial Intelligence Academic Council at the Title V High Impact Practices in Higher Education 2024 Conference. His announcement included Rolando R. Garza as the chair for this 13-member council.

This council will provide strategic guidance in response to the nationwide education transformation by Generative AI, addressing AI's challenges and opportunities, and evaluating its impact on Texas A&M University's educational mission.


Our Mission

The Artificial Intelligence Academic Council aspires to lead Texas A&M University-Kingsville in using the transformative potential of artificial intelligence to enhance educational excellence and operational effectiveness.

Our vision is to strategically integrate AI technologies in a manner that advances the university’s mission, supports student and faculty success, and ensures ethical and safe use of AI tools.


The Council Charge

This council will provide strategic guidance and support for AI. The charge is to:

  • Examine AI's challenges, opportunities, and impact on TAMUK's mission attainment.
  • Advise and establish policy surrounding the use of AI, particularly in academics.
  • Create guidelines for the ethical use of AI in research, pedagogy, and administrative matters.
  • Research and even develop AI applications, where possible.
  • Host seminars and workshops to educate the TAMUK community about AI advancements, applications, and potential risks.
  • Invite external speakers to share industry knowledge.
  • Recommend ways to support faculty and staff in further learning and applying AI to their work, particularly in the classroom.
