 PROGRAM MISSION:  

The mission of the Communication Disorders Program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville is to provide culturally and linguistically diverse state of the art educational, clinical, and outreach experiences in communication disorders to enhance the quality of life for communicatively impaired citizens of the border region, the State of Texas, and national and international communities.

Program Goals:

Display knowledge of the scope of communication disorders.  Write professionally accurate clinical reports.  Critically examine issues of cultural and linguistic diversity in the field of communication disorders

Outcome 1:

The CSDO candidate demonstrates proficiency in oral and written communication through discipline relevant, varied and effective written products.

Outcome 2:

The CSDO candidate will develop and implement evidence based intervention plans and reports that reflect an understanding of relevant content continuous and appropriate intervention practices and a commitment to meeting the needs of their clients.

Outcome 3:

The CSDO candidate will demonstrate through written and oral communication and clinical demonstration the knowledge of cultural and linguistic diversity within the field of communication disorders.

 Assessment 1

This shall be assessed by successful completion of an exit evaluation covering the breath of communication disorders.

 Assessment 2

This shall be assessed by during the candidates clinical practicum experience. Students shall be continually assessed on their production of Lesson Plans, SOAP notes, and Progress Reports.

Assessment 3

This shall be assessed by successful completion of the Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology course, speech-language pathology intervention planning and implementation and the candidates’ sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity during classroom discussions and interactions.

About CSDO

Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSDO) is a growing field in today's society. The demand for speech pathologists and audiologists is constantly increasing and will continue to grow for the next several years. As a speech language pathologist (SLP) or audiologist (A), one can expect to work with a variety of people in a multitude of settings. With a bachelor's degree, one can work as an assistant under the supervision of a licensed speech language pathologist or audiologist. With a master's degree you can work in hospitals, rehabilitative clinics, schools or even private practice.

Degree Requirements

The Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders requires a minimum of 120-121 hours for graduation with a minor in psychology. Out of the 120-121 hours, 36 hours are CSDO classes and 18 hours are for a minor in psychology. Students must also meet the general education requirements, communication skill requirements, residence and all degree requirements that are specified in the Texas A & M University-Kingsville catalog. In addition, an overall GPA of 2.75 is the required minimum for any CSDO undergraduate major.  We also require that by the completion of the first four core major classes, a B average (CSDO 3.0 GPA) be maintained. Please be aware of course pre-requisites. For a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, the academic hours total 48. A student in the master's program will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA to graduate. Instructions for applying to the master's program can be found here.

All students entering the program are assigned an academic advisor to help guide them through the next few years. It is advised that you consult with your advisor before registering for any classes.
