KINGSVILLE (Oct 19, 2026) — In its mission of serving South Texas students through accessible resources, research opportunities and student development, Texas A&M university-Kingsville has made major strides via a record start to Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27), securing 27 new multi-year awards totaling more than $24.3 million.
“This is an incredible start to the year,” said Texas A&M University-Kingsville president Dr. Robert vela. “This data reflects our expanding research enterprise, which positions our university to lead the way in addressing the real-world challenges in South Texas that require innovation, accelerating economic development for the region, while ensuring new opportunities for students.”
The new awards, totaling $24,332,197.69, allows the university to bring significant external resources to the university that support efforts in student access and success, workforce development, artificial intelligence, water-energy nexus, educational innovation and institutional capacity building and more.
“This record September is a great achievement for our faculty and staff and reflects the momentum we are building across our research enterprise,” said Dr. Jose F. Espiritu, Vice President for Research and Innovation. “Our researchers continue to develop innovative ideas, build strong partnerships, and compete successfully for external funding that creates opportunities for our students and strengthens our institution. We are excited to build on this momentum throughout FY27.”
TAMUK has now secured $16.4 million in annualized funding for FY27 that includes $8.88 million in new awards and $7.5 million from ongoing multi-year awards. Of that funding, $9.4 million is classified as federal and private research funding, helping the university realize its research goals and reach expenditure metrics associated with the Texas University Fund (TUF).
Though the start to FY was strong, Dr. Espiritu ensures that it is only the beginning.
“This record September is an exciting start to FY27, but it is also part of the broader momentum we are building across our research enterprise,” he said. “With a strong pipeline of proposals and additional funding opportunities ahead, the Office of Research and Innovation will continue working with our colleges, faculty, and research teams to strengthen competitive proposals, expand collaborations, and increase external support for our university’s mission.”
