KINGSVILLE (February 13, 2026) — It didn’t happen overnight but Jazz Band I from the School of Music at Texas A&M University-Kingsville have released their first album with help from the Sound Recording Technology (SRT) program at the Dr. Steven H. Tallant Music Building.

It took about a year to record For Starters, a seven-song album, said Dr. Kyle Millsap, professor of trumpet and jazz and interim associate director of the School of Music, said. “It is the first album the jazz band has recorded completely in house with TAMUK students performing and recording.

“All of these recordings are going to be a collaboration between the jazz and SRT areas with faculty directing student production and helping with the finishing details,” he added.

Two of the pieces were even composed by Texas A&M-Kingsville musicians. Restless Wanderings was written by Dr. Thomas Zinninger, director of jazz studies and associate professor of saxophone. Joseph Hernandez was a TAMUK student at the time of the recording of his composition In the Meantime. He is now working on a master’s degree in music at University of Texas.

The remainder of the songs on the album are Wind Machine, Limehouse Blues, Bebop Charlie, Por Ahora and Body Snatchers. Including all seven tunes, For Starters is 42 minutes long.

Millsap said For Starters is a fully digital release and is available on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, YouTube and other digital music streaming services.
