KINGSVILLE (Sept. 16, 2025) — Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) Women’s track and field member Oneika Brissett and the Jamaican 400-meter relay team captured the silver medal during the U23 Pan American Championships at Parque Olímpico Pista De Atletismo, Luque, Asunción in Paraguay last month.
Brissett, a sophomore kinesiology major hailing from Montego Bay, Jamaica, ran the second leg of the relay, helping her team finish the race with a time of 3 minutes, 31.74 seconds, narrowly missing out on the gold medal. Canada won the race with a time of 3:31.73
“(The games) were an experience I will remember for the rest of my life — winning a medal with my squad,” Brissett said. “It takes more than simply speed to represent Jamaica internationally; it takes pride, legacy, and teamwork. It brought me great joy and gratitude to stand on that podium with my teammates, knowing that we dedicated everything for our country.
“I had the duty of maintaining the momentum while running the second leg, so I gave it my all,” Brissett added. “Being a member of that relay team served as a reminder to me that trust, teamwork, and commitment are more important for success than just individual talent. More than just achievement, this medal is an affirmation to our commitment, selflessness, and Jamaican spirit.”
Shanque Williams, Daynea Alisea Colstock and Shana Kaye Anderson rounded out Team Jamaica’s 400-meter relay team.
Brissett also competed on Jamaica’s Mixed 400-meter relay team and finished in fourth place with a time of 3:23.07 alongside Omary Robinson, Kevin Bliss and Abrina Wright.
In addition to the earned accolades, the games were made all the more satisfying as she was able to represent her country while being a TAMUK runner.
“Representing the university as well made the experience even more special,” Brissett said. “It was an honor to showcase Texas A&M University-Kingsville at that stage.”
