KINGSVILLE (May 2, 2025) — Seniors from the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) presented their capstone projects to university faculty, alumni and industry partners for judging during the Senior Design Conference on Friday, May 2, at the engineering complex.
There were more than 150 seniors in 36 teams presenting projects in computer science, architectural, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical and natural gas engineering. Presentations were held in six parallel sessions under the supervision of moderators and judges.
“We have a lot of different projects,” said Austin McCoy, Director of the Javelina Engineering Student Success Center. “We have all different disciplines in multiple areas that have produced very exciting projects. It just really shows how our students are really innovative, exciting and that they have so many ideas.
Projects were judged based on oral presentations and technical merit using a standard rubric, with the top three winners being awarded cash prizes. Judges were made up of industry partners and nearly 70 returning Javelina alumni online and in person.
Despite the drive for the prizes, the presence of alumni and representatives from their respective fields, students had a real opportunity to network at the annual event.
“We have been growing this event and it has become a tradition for the College of Engineering,” Dean of the College of Engineering Dr. Heidi Taboada said. “Every single year we keep getting more and more judges interested in giving back. We also have various industry representatives who aren’t alumni, but they are here to potentially hire the students. It’s a great connection, building relationships with industries and being able to bring back alumni to connect with the next generation of Javelina engineers.”
“It’s important, especially in the College of Engineering, to network early,” McCoy added. “It’s also important to network after they leave as well, so they can help the college in anyway. It’s not just in senior design, but in any other activities we have here. It’s really awesome to have alumni come back and give back to us and show that they really care. It’s really exciting to stay in contact with them every year.”
Winners are set to be announced in the coming weeks.
