Texas A&M-Kingsville students bring home record number of awards from TIPA contest

KINGSVILLE (April 7, 2023) — Members of the staff of The South Texan, the student newspaper at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, recently competed at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) contest and brought home a record 39 awards. In addition, Nicole Morris, assistant professor of practice and student media advisor, was voted TIPA president for a two-year term.

 

The South Texan staff brought home several awards as a team, including first place in general news video story and headline writing; second place in overall web design; third place in general news multimedia and editorial; and honorable mention in general news multimedia story, op/ed design, overall design newspaper, website and overall newspaper.

 

Individual winners included:

 

Ronni Reyna of Victoria, first place in live contest multimedia, newscast video, multimedia feature and general news; second place in general news photo and third place in feature photo;

 

Erik Estrada of San Antonio, first place in live contest multimedia, newscast video, multimedia feature, feature reporting, multimedia sports story, and sports reporting video; second place in general news video and feature reporting video; third place in advertising/PSA promo; and honorable mention in general news audio story;

 

Melissa Mata of Corpus Christi, first place in live contest multimedia and feature reporting video;

 

Emeri Drewry of Edinburg, first place in live contest multimedia, news cast video, multimedia feature and general news audio story; second place in feature reporting video and program production audio; and honorable mention in general news audio story;

 

Jessica Tijerina of San Benito, first place in live contest multimedia and multimedia sports story; second place in live contest news photo and honorable mention in feature photo;

 

Makaylah Chavez of McAllen, first place in advertising/PSA promo and feature story; second place, advertising/PSA promo audio and general column; and third place, social media breaking news and feature story;

 

Adan Botello of Robstown, first place in advertising/PSA promo;

 

Rae Martinez of La Feria, first place in newscast video, multimedia feature, multimedia sports story and sports reporting video; second place in general news video; third place in advertising/PSA promo and general news;

 

Dominic Valdez of Eagle Pass, first place in feature reporting video;

 

Chris Olivarez of Tynan, first place in multimedia sports story and sports reporting video and second place in general news video;

 

Nadya Garcia of Corpus Christi, first place in general news audio story and second place in program production audio;

 

Dylan Sanchez of Houston, first place in podcast; third place in sports game story; and honorable mention in live contest radio announcing and podcast;

 

Haseeb Javaid of Pakistan, second place in feature reporting video; and

 

Sarah Reyna of Bishop, third place in breaking news.
