Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s online engineering and education degrees are earning national recognition as two of the top online graduate programs in the country.
The online industrial engineering graduate degree program is ranked 21st in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s listing of the Best Graduate Online Engineering Programs in the country. A&M-Kingsville’s online education graduate program is ranked 73rd on the publication’s list of Best Graduate Online Education Programs.
Rankings for both lists are based on faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, student engagement and admissions selectivity.
“We are proud to offer such quality graduate programs utilizing technology that is convenient for our students,” said Texas A&M University-Kingsville President Dr. Steven Tallant. “Our online engineering and education programs are among the best in the country and this type of national recognition shines a spotlight on our successes in these areas.”
According to U.S. News & World Report, more than 220 engineering schools from across the country were surveyed for the list of top engineering online programs. Of those, only the 70 offering online degree programs were considered for the list. Currently, 20 students from Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Corpus Christi and Mexico are enrolled in the industrial engineering program, which can be completed entirely online. The engineering program is the top ranked engineering program in Texas. Only one other Texas school—Texas Tech University—ranked in the top 50.

The Industrial Engineering online degree also ranked:

  • 11th in Faculty Credentials and Training
  • 19th in Admission Selectivity
  • 25th for Student Engagement

“There are many factors that make the online program a success, but the most important one is the high standard requirement,” said Dr. Kai Jin, industrial engineering graduate coordinator. “The admission and graduation requirements are the same for online students and in-class students. Every industrial engineering professor is working closely with online students through emails, phone calls and teleconference to meet their individual needs.
“This recognition means a lot to our industrial engineering master’s program, college, graduate school and our students. This places our master’s program in industrial engineering on the national map among top schools and encourages us to continue to improve and grow the program.”
A&M-Kingsville’s College of Education and Human Performance offers several online graduate programs, including degrees in adult education, kinesiology, educational administration, instructional technology and counseling and guidance. More than 300 students are enrolled in the college’s online offerings. According to U.S. News & World Report, only 208 of the 650 colleges of education that responded to the publication’s survey offered online degree programs and were eligible for the list. A&M-Kingsville is one of six Texas universities listed in the Top 100 of Online Graduate Education Programs.

The online education degree programs also ranked:

  • 65th in Admissions Selectivity
  • 74th in Faculty Credentials and Training
  • 88th in Student Engagement
“This is great news for the hard work of the faculty and staff in the College of Education and Human Performance,” said Dr. Alberto Ruiz, dean of the College of Education and Human Performance. “The faculty and staff are dedicated and have worked diligently to earn this ranking.  Every day our students—those in the traditional and virtual classrooms—benefit from their hard work and dedication to educating our youth and public school administrators. We must continue in our unwavering mission to improve the education system with limited resources,” Ruiz said.
Rankings are based on data from July 2011-June 2012.
