The Student Professional Development Program (SPDP) gives business students a competitive edge in obtaining internships and securing desired employment. 

By combining theory with practice, our non-credit workshops help students personally and professionally develop. By applying themselves in the program workshops, business students will develop a balanced portfolio which reflects their academic, professional and career readiness. SPDP can be a student’s unique resource in gaining competitive advantage over other qualified job candidates. 

We achieve this by focusing workshops on personal development, industry and career knowledge, organizational leadership panels, networking, and professional image enhancement.

Career Planning*

In this workshop, students are led to self-discover their strengths, industry & career interests & potential fit, and to further their pursuit of becoming a business professional.

Professional Appearance

Tuesday, October 6, 2015 • 4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. • 219 AB&C, MSUB

In this workshop students learn how to improve their professional image and how to appropriately dress for diverse business and professional occasions, including interviews. Gentlemen should bring a tie to the workshop for a demonstration.

Professional Etiquette Dinner

Thursday, October 15, 2015 • 5:30 p.m. • 221 AB&C, MSUB

Students learn the dynamics of interacting and dining in a professional environment.

The Job Campaign

Tuesday, November 10, 2015 • 4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. • 221 MSUB

In this workshop students learn the mechanics of a successful job campaign, to include perfecting the cover letter & résumé, targeting specific employment opportunities, interviewing and follow-up. This workshop includes an interactive session with a panel of leaders from a diverse mix of business organizations.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT

The Student Professional Development Program consists of four workshops: Career Planning, Professional Appearance, The Job Campaign, and Professional Etiquette Dinner. The workshops are a graduation requirement for all College of Business Administration majors. Students are encouraged to take all four workshops prior to applying for admission to the College of Business Administration. Multiple workshops will be offered in the fall and spring semesters. Workshops must be attended in their entirety. Incomplete attendance will result in having to repeat the entire workshop (register, attend, pay fee).

SUGGESTED ATTIRE

Students are strongly encouraged to present themselves in a professional manner at each workshop. Business casual attire is recommended. The workshops involve professionals from the community and the university. Every contact with them should form a positive and professional impression.
