Roberta Flores / The South Texan
Devoted supporters of Sen. Barack Obama (D-illinois) stand on stage as the Democratic Presidential Hopeful looks to take Texas to assure hime the nomination to run in the general election in November. Obama has wo the last 11 straight primaries. |
I didn’t get the opportunity to see Sen. Hilary Clinton’s rally in Robstown two weeks ago.
Though I am not a Hillary supporter, it would have been nice to be there.
However, thanks to the power of the Internet, I got to watch the rally. She had the biggest smile as if she was beyond excited to be there at the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds.
I did notice that she did not bash on her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama.
Obama is on pace to take the Democratic nomination, but there are a couple of huge obstacles in front of him - the states of Ohio and Texas.
Obama got his opportunity to tour Texas this week and, like Hilary, he also made an appearance in the Coastal Bend.
Instead of choosing Robstown as Hillary did, Obama thought bigger and had his rally at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi. This time I was not going to miss out.
The experience was insane.
The South Texan reporting crew included myself, Michelle Leal, Kristie Ann Vela, Roberta Flores, Keiona E. Ausbie and Mary Beth Cleavlin. We showed up two hours early and got to the front of the press line for credentials.
It would seem that it would be no big deal to just go to the line, get our credentials and be on our way.
After waiting for nearly two hours, we finally got our press passes to get in.
As I walked in, I went to our press area, listened, soaked in the surroundings and then waited for the man of the hour.
It turns out we waited two more hours.
When Obama finally made his way into the arena, the crowd went wild. As much as I wanted to join in with the cheers, I had to stay professional.
I was there as a member of the press and not as a supporter of Obama.
At first, it did not look like there were going to be many people in the venue, but about 15 minutes before he arrived the place was packed. More than 6,000 people packed the cavernous arena.
It was like being at a rock concert from one of my favorite artists.
As Obama was speaking, I got thought of how much power we have as college students to make a difference to this country of ours.
These candidates, whether they are Republican or Democrat, are trying to reach to us.
Obama’s plan for education brought smiles upon the faces of many college and high school students who were at the rally.
Although I will already graduate by the time his plan goes into effect to help college students, pending he wins the presidency, it’s a great feeling knowing that students who will not be so fortunate in getting the help they deserve to get the education that is much needed for them to succeed in life.
Obama’s plan will help. This is one of the reasons he has my support.
Although the rallies have come and gone, people can still get a chance to experience one.
Go online and watch some of the candidate’s rallies. See some debates, go to the their web pages.
Do some research. Though there are people who are scared to make a choice, just voting for a candidate is not a wrong decision.
