KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville head men’s basketball coach Pete Peterson was recently named the 2008-09 Small College Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
Peterson led the Javelinas to a 19-11 record and an NCAA Division II Regional Tournament appearance this year. “No coach has a chance to win an award like this without great players,” said Peterson. “I was fortunate to have outstanding athletes this year and making a run into the NCAA Tournament was an incredible experience. Hopefully we can continue our winning tradition that we are building at Texas A&M-Kingsville.”
When asked about what his response was when he heard he won the award, Peterson had the following to say. “I have to say that I was a little shocked when I first learned of this award. There are so many great coaches at our level in the state of Texas that realistically it could go to one of a dozen every year. But, I am thrilled and honored to be named Small College Coach of the Year by a wonderful organization, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. I have been around long enough to know that this award represents every facet of a program. From our administration and our great support here, to our entire staff and the countless hours put into a great season, as well as the community and student body that support us at each game and finally, the players, it’s really about the players.
Peterson is quietly putting together an outstanding coaching resume with the Javelinas. He has directed his program to six straight winning seasons which is a school record. He has posted a 186-147 record in 12 seasons and is set to become the first coach in school history with at least 200 career wins next year. This is the third time he has earned a Coach of the Year honor joining his two previous Lone Star Conference South Division awards that he won in 2003-04 and 2005-06, respectively. He has also led the Hoggies to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
