Lessons learned at Texas
A&M University-Kingsville
Like me you are just a
face in a sea of faces that
have walked through the
halls of history at this university
that will inevitably
fade even in the minds of
those that knew you ever
existed.
For me the faces behind
good advice rarely fade. Instead
of a boring farewell
column here is just a compilation
of wisdom and advice
that has helped me through
the years. From the most recent
bits of wisdom to oldest
with a bit of my own to
you the student at the end.
-Volunteerism and doing
things for others is great but
sometimes you need to be
selfish to get what you want
in life.
-Do not waste your time
helping those that will not
help themselves.
-If you want to fly with
the eagles stop messing
with the crows.
-Out of the seven hundred
people that will graduate
with you only ten will
make it in life, out of those
ten five do really good and
one will do something
great. Were do you fall into
this?
-I do not care if you like
me take the knowledge I am
giving you here then move
on.
-There are three things
that will always make
money in this world drugs,
sex and religion.
-Do you want to make a
million dollars? Are you
willing to do what it takes?
-You are not competing
with the guy next to you.
You are competing with
everyone else in the world.
-Do not be a smart ass,
shut up and listen then you
might learn something.
Until recent years I never
really had any plans for my
future and just rolled like
the tumble weed were the
wind wanted to take me
and so far I just got lucky. I
try not to dwell on the
thought, what if I had been
more proactive in shaping
my own path, not letting
trivial things get in the way,
where would I be now.
So my advice to you, be
more proactive in shaping
your future. Actually sit
down set your goals and
then make a plan how you
will reach that goal.
Now if your just starting
your college education it
should be to graduate as
quickly as possible without
running up to much debt
and getting as much work
experience as possible.
Have a little fun while you
are at it but never let it get
in the way of your classes.
For those of you like me
who this is last time you
may see a class room.
Where is your plan for the
next two years or the next
five? Hopefully it isn’t still
hanging at the same old
bars, roaming these halls or
mooching off your parents.
Be that one that does
something great.
