Oh, “The South Texan.” I
find it hard to believe that I
started my career here two
years ago at Texas A&M University-
Kingsville.
It was great to be welcomed
by everybody here
and I find it harder to believe
that my time is almost up.
I came here as a sports editor
and had my entire focus
on the athletic programs on
campus. I interviewed
Chicago Bears offensive lineman
Roberto Garza for my
first assignment when they
made the Super Bowl, which
was pretty exciting.
Sports is what I have a
passion for and to see myself
become more than just a
sports writer was something
I didn’t expect to do at
TAMUK.
Covering football games
was always an assignment
that got me hyped. It was
such an exciting experience
to go to Javelina Stadium and
interview some of the players
and coach Bo Atterberry. I’m
also grateful that he didn’t
get all kinds of crazy when
the team did lose.
Basketball was also something
I enjoyed with the university
as well. Plus, I always
had an easy time interviewing
coach Pete Peterson. Give
that man one question and he
will give you a 30-minute interview.
Despite all the sports that
I covered, I moved into news
territory. I got to cover the
Barack Obama rally in Corpus
Christi last year when he
was running for President of
the United States and it was
mind blowing.
I worked on more news
stories and somewhere in the
matrix I ended up becoming
the Editor-in-chief of the
paper.
It was nerve-wracking at
first, and I still had the
nerves kick in up to this final
issue. Even when I would
here those famous words
from my long time instructor
Dr. Manuel Flores, “We’re
not gonna make it.”We still
finished even if it was after
deadline. Yeah, we still need
to work on that.
Outside of the newspaper
I got to enjoy being a part of
the local sports radio show
on 91.1 FM and I always got
a kick out of doing the show.
I really must thank Larry
Garza for hooking me up and
the people at KTAI for letting
the show continue after he
graduated.
Plus, while at TAMUK, I
got to meet a great group of
people who helped me keep
my faith in check. Everyone
at the Catholic Student Organization
and the Baptist
Student Ministry where I
have met are great and the
people I’ve run into at both
places have made my experience
here more pleasant.
Before I wind this column
up I really have to thank two
of the most important people
in my life. Adriana Garza
and Dr. Flores have been the
ones to give me that extra
kick in the rear to help me do
my best.
Whatever happens from
here on out, I can never
thank you two enough for
helping me become the journalist
I am. I promise that I
will not let any of you two
down. Also, for those who
picked up the paper this year,
I really appreciate it and I
will never do another column
about sprinklers again.
One more thing. Modesto
Morales, please get over the
fact that I am graduating. All
joking aside I’ll miss this university
and the people I have
encountered.
