After an $87 million
opening for “X-Men Origins:
Wolverine,” the summer
movie season has
begun with a bang.
After the success of last
summer’s monster, “The
Dark Knight,” this group
of films is hoping to give
the Academy Award winning
film a run for its
money.
Like every summer,
these films being released
include explosions, wizards,
more explosions,
alien robots and of course
more explosions.
There’s no telling which
film is going to be the
bread winner this year.
Amongst the top-10
grossing films of last year,
the top six were released
in the summer and all of
them surpassed the $200
million mark. The top
three hit $300 million and
“The Dark Knight” became
the second highest grossing
film of all-time in
North America with $530.9
million.
So which films are students
at Texas A&M University-
Kingsville looking
forward to this year?
“I really want to check
out G.I. Joe,” said freshman
business management
major Jorge Mata. “G.I. Joe
was such a big deal growing
up and seeing it in live
action should be interesting.”
“G.I. Joe is expected to
hit theatres on Aug. 7.
Another film based on
popular action figures is
the sequel to the 2007
blockbuster “Transformers.”
“That’s the movie that I
want to see,” said freshman
accounting major
Modesto Morales. “The
first one made such an
awesome impact that this
one should follow in its
footsteps. Hopefully, it
won’t suck.”
Senior interdisciplinary
major Armando Castellano
is also looking forward to
the film.
“I can’t wait for Transformers
2,” he said. “The
first one was so awesome.
The sequel, officially titled,
“Transformers: Revenge
of the Fallen” opens
June 24.
Other films opening this
summer include “Harry
Potter and the Half-Blood
Prince” opening July 15.
“Terminator Salvation,”
which releases on May 21.
This week comes the anticipated
release of an updated
version of “Star
Trek” and like “Wolverine,”
this film is also expected
to create a dent in
the box-office with a big
opening when the film
opens May 8.
