Herlinda G. Guerra, 48, a graduate student at Texas A&M University-Kingsville was killed Wednesday, April 16 in her home of Realitos after a dispute broke out between her son-in-law and her daughter.
Duval County investigators have issued a first-degree murder warrant for David Alfonso Salas, 31, Guerra’s son in-law, who fled after the shooting.
Investigator Abelizario “Billy” Escalante with the Duval County Sheriff’s office said in a Corpus Christi Caller Times interview that Guerra was shot twice, once in the left side of the chest and once grazed across the head. The gun used was a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun, he said.
Guerra’s daughter was in the kitchen at the time of the shooting and was not injured, Escalante said.
She told police that Salas shot her mother. No one else was at the home at the time, he said. The couple also have a son.
Texas Rangers are working with Central South Texas Criminal Investigative Unit, a task force that collaborates with area sheriff’s departments.
Salas remains at large and should be considered dangerous, said Cmdr. Tammy Trejo with the unit. Salas is described as Hispanic, 6 feet tall, 160 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.
Salas was last seen wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.
Officials suspect he could be driving an older-model black Jeep Wrangler without a canvas top or doors that was taken from the ranch with the Texas license plate 820CXF..
