Wellness

Welcome to Wellness Programs at Texas A&M University-Kingsville!

A Strong Body…A Strong Mind

Wellness is the condition of good physical and mental health, especially when maintained by proper diet, exercise and habits.  Wellness can mean many things to many people.

SHW wellness programs are based around six wellness dimensions:  Physical, Intellectual, Spiritual, Occupational, Emotional and Social.

  • Occupational – Involved in preparing for work in which one will gain personal satisfaction and enrichment through work.
  • Emotional – Taking care of yourself so that you are more prepared to deal with life’s stresses.
  • Physical – Ability to apply your knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self-management, attitude, and skills toward achieving your personal fitness and health goals.
  • Social – The interdependence with others and nature to enhance the building of a just and caring community.
  • Intellectual – Active participation in scholastic cultural and community activities.
  • Spiritual – When we are in tune with our spiritual selves we can find meaning in life events, comfort when things aren’t going well, the beauty in life, the ability to be compassionate towards others and individual purpose.

Classes and Workshops

SHW offers a wide variety of classes and workshops related to wellness and college life. All classes are open only to TAMUK students unless otherwise noted.

National College Health Assessment

The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) is a confidential, online survey used by universities across the country to understand the health issues and concerns of college students. SHW administers the survey every other year to a random sample of TAMUK students.

The NCHA collects information from students on topics like alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, sexual and mental health, weight and nutrition, and personal safety and violence. SHW uses survey results to plan programs and services to meet the expressed needs of TAMUK students.

Students are randomly selected to participate. Look for an invitation email in the Fall 2011 semester. To view results from 2010-2011 check out the NCHA link.
