FRESHMEN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
The Department of Student Activities is excited about a new program for freshmen--the Freshman Leadership Academy! The academy has been created in an effort to provide additional leadership development for TAMUK students. The academy will allow first year students the ability to hone and develop their leadership skills and abilities while connecting with each other, the campus and society as a whole.
In creating the academy the department needs your assistance. If you know of a TAMUK freshman that you feel will benefit from this program and/or whom you feel has already demonstrated leadership abilities or the potential for leadership, please nominate him/her. You may nominate by phone at 593-2760 or by e-mail at barry.mckinney@tamuk.edu. Nominations will be accepted through October 17. Needed for nomination is the student's name, local address, local phone number, and e-mail address (where possible).
HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PROGRAM (HEP) ENTERS SIXTH WEEK
The High School Equivalency program is currently serving 45 students. Thus far one has graduated and nine have completed the coursework. It is anticipated that six more students will complete coursework next week. Once coursework is completed, it is scored. If students meet the passing standard, they graduate and an equivalent diploma is awarded.
The HEP students have participated in several workshops and presentations provided by the Wellness Center, Financial Aid, Special Programs, Coastal Bend College, Del Mar College, Texas Workforce Commission, Kleberg County Project F.I.N.D., Palmer Drug Abuse Program, Tobacco Education Awareness Program, and the Armed Forces.
FRANK URENO ASSUMES TACUSPA PRESIDENCY
Mr. Frank Ureno assumed the role as president for the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA) at the recent Fall Conference held in San Antonio. Mr. Ureno has been a member since 1997 and served as president-elect for the past year. In this role he will oversee the oldest student affairs association in the state and help provide development opportunities for student affairs practitioners while collaborating with several state agencies. Frank will serve as president until fall 2002, then one year as past president.
ROSAS-NAJERA WINS TACUSPA CONTEST, DIVISION PRESENTS EDUCATIONAL TOPICS
Connie Rosas-Najera, interim director of Life Services & Wellness, won the graduate student case study competition at the fall TACUSPA conference. Ms. Rosas-Najera, who is completing her doctorate, successfully assessed a sexual assault case study and provided strategies and ramifications for those strategies, winning not only the award but a $100 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble (one of the contest sponsors). Congrats, Connie!
Two educational sessions were offered by professionals in the Division of Student Affairs. Dr. Tom Jackson Jr., Esmeralda Nandin, Steve Sutton (Houston-Clear Lake), and Leann and Gregory Elkins (Texas Tech) spoke on the challenges for dual career couples in higher education. Jackson, Rosas-Najera, Esperanza Cavazos, and Selena Ortiz spoke on recapturing balance and perspective in the work week.
BOOK EARLY FOR SODEXHO FOOD CATERING
Sodexho is the proud provider of TAMUK's food service needs. Because of the upcoming holiday season, please remember to book catering events as soon as possible (at least four days in advance for small events and two weeks in advance for large events). This will assist Sodexho in providing the type of service you deserve. Additionally, be sure you first book your room if you are planning an event in the SUB.
As a reminder, Sodexho has the exclusive contract for catering at TAMUK and must approve any outside caterers or food service coming on to campus. Sodexho pays a commission to the university for all catering and retail food operations. This helps keep rates low across campus. Please note that an outside vendor may appear to be cheaper because they do not pay commissions to the university and do not offer the broader services that are expected from Sodexho. Sodexho can meet almost any price when comparing like services and costs. Please note that Sodexho takes food management/safety operations very seriously and wants to make sure that food served has been prepared properly and kept at correct temperatures. Food borne illness is a serious problem, but can be prevented with proper diligence. If you have any questions about Sodexho and the campus food service, please contact Steve Kauf, Sodexho General Manager at 593-3117.

RONALD E. MCNAIR PROGRAM CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This program is named in honor of the astronaut who died in the 1986 space-shuttle explosion. Students who participate in this program are provided with research opportunities and faculty mentors. This grant supports undergraduate students’ scholarly activities throughout the academic year and summer. Through this support, TAMUK is playing a very important role in preparing future faculty by encouraging students to pursue graduate studies.
Jacob Galan and Gonzalo Lopez, Jr. presented research at the SACNAS conference in Phoenix, Arizona September 27- 30. Lopez also received a $250 award for his poster presentation at the 2001 Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Conference. Four scholars attended the 1st McNair Scholars Research Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Scholars Carmen Canales, Rupert Canales, Laurie Lomas, and Israel Saenz presented their research October 3-7.
The McNair Scholars Program is in the process of interviewing and selecting new scholars for the 2001-2002 academic year. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Almann Taylor Solis at 593-2241.
