September 27, 2006 CALENDAR OF UPCOMING EVENTS
STUDENTS CONTINUE "HOG CALL" TRADITION Thursday, September 28th at 9:00 p.m., all students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in one of the newer Javelina traditions - Hog Call. Hog Call is a chance to have fun, holler, learn, and practice Javelina songs, chants, and rituals to be used during Hoggie football games. Hog Call is held, rain or shine, in the SPEC (Steinke Physical Education Center) the Thursday before each home football game. Hog Call is coordinated by TAMUK Yell Leaders, Cheerleaders, Student Government, fraternities & sororities, and several other student groups. Everyone one, including staff and faculty, are invited. "SING IT HOGGIE" -- A SOCIAL AFTER HOG CALL Residence Life, in conjunction with Student Activities, is hosting the "Sing it Hoggie" Karaoke social directly following Hog Call this Thursday, September 28th in the SPEC. The social will be from 10:00-12:00 a.m. and will feature the Fear Factor competition from the "Are You Game Activity" sponsored by CAB and Student Activities. ARE YOU GAME CONTEST SWEEPING CAMPUS Campus Activities Board has created the ultimate competition for 10 student groups competing for two airline tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S. Challenge #2, held Tuesday, September 26, was the Survivor challenge. The challenge required participating students to camp out on University Boulevard from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Students had from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to gather any items they would need to "survive" the night. Another part of the competition had the teams creating a replica of a Javelina using any materials they could find. Groups were judged on the creativity of their replica. Points were deducted if groups reported to the boulevard late. MENDIETTA ELECTED REGIONAL COORDINATOR FOR NACA Nino Mendietta will become regional coordinator of the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) Central Region on October 15th and will serve through May 2009. The region comprises eight states including Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and portions of New Mexico & Colorado. NACA links the higher education and entertainment communities in a business and learning partnership, creating educational and business opportunities for NACA's student and professional members. BARNES & NOBLE TO SELL 'UNDER ARMOUR' COLLEGIATE ATTIRE It started with a simple plan to make a superior T-shirt. A shirt that provided compression and removed perspiration off your skin rather than absorb it. A shirt that worked with your body to regulate temperature and enhance performance. Best known from the commercials, "We Must Protect this House," Under Armour tees, shorts, and hoods for both men and women will soon be on our campus. The Javelina brand will be incorporated onto Under Armour apparel. A&M-Kingsville is one of only a few campuses carrying the Under Armour brand. Look for the product in our bookstore early November. STRESS MANAGEMENT SEMINARS Session 1: Sept. 27 and October 4 & 11 or Session 2: November 1, 8 & 15 Are you a stress junkie? Participants will learn the difference between positive and negative coping styles. Students will have the opportunity to identify their stress coping patterns, partake in visual imagery meditation, and other activities. BUSINESS ETIQUETTE DINNER HOSTS 189 PARTICIPANTS 189 students, faculty, and staff participated in the Business Etiquette dinner held Wednesday, September 20 in the MSUB ballrooms. "This was one of the largest dinners held," stated Karen Engebrecht, director of career services and host for the event. The event teaches participants the formalities of fine dining including such things as which utensil to use, how to be seated, passing items, mingling, and much more. The program presenter was Ms. Jane Ibanez. SPECIAL PROGRAMS AWARDED GRANTS FROM U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Special Programs was awarded a four-year grant for $880,000 from the U.S. Department of Education for "Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Educational Talent Search." In addition, Special Programs was awarded $246,536 from the U.S. Department of Education-TRIO Programs for the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program. Special Programs receives over $3.0 million annually from the U.S. Department of Education to support low-income, 1st generation students. ERNEST DE SOTO DISPLAY AT THE BEN BAILEY ART GALLERY Ernest De Soto, a renowned lithographer, will display lithographs at the Ben Bailey Art Gallery from October 10th to November 3rd. The project is held in conjunction with the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, TX. A reception will be held on Tuesday, October 10th at 6 p.m. in the Ben Bailey Gallery. Mr. De Soto will conduct a master workshop for students on October 10th & 11th. The event is sponsored by the Hispanic Heritage Committee and co-sponsored by the Bailey Art Gallery, Del Mar College, Victoria Regional Museum, and the Rockport Center for the Arts. SHAPING GREAT MINDS & FUTURE LEADERS The annual Student Organization Leadership Conference was held on Saturday, September 16, 2006. The conference is a collaborative effort involving university faculty, staff and students to promote leadership among the student organizations. Over 160 students and 68 organizations participated. The exciting Barry King from Kirkland Productions gave an exuberant keynote speech. HELPING HANDS IS HELPING HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Helping Hands…Helping Javs, the new community service program under is collaborating with Habitat for Humanity in Corpus Christi for the month of October. Over 120 A&M-Kingsville students are trading in their free time for a good cause. Students will paint, landscape, and put the finishing touches on a house for a deserving family. WOMEN'S ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Life Services & Wellness will be offering an array of women's programs that educate and enhance awareness of women's issues while promoting a climate of social justice that is free of barriers and discriminations. Every Thursday, come on over during your lunch hour and weigh in and get some "healthful advice" from our on-site nutritionist. Come solo or bring your department. We will show you creative ways to buddy up, or get competitive to make getting healthy FUN!!! HISPANIC HERITAGE BANQUET TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE The Hispanic Heritage Banquet will be held on October 12th at 6 p.m. Keynote speaker will be Rosa Rosales, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
