WOMEN'S CENTER ASSISTS WITH RESIDENT ASSISTANT STAFF TRAINING
Did you know that 40% of young women ages 14 to 17 report knowing someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend? Did you also know that nearly 80% of young women who have been physically abused in their intimate relationships continue to date their abuser? And did you know that 30% of the women between the ages 15-19 murdered each year, 30% are killed by their husband or boyfriend? This information and more was shared at a lively training session for forty-three Resident's Assistants and Senior Staff in the resident halls on campus. The two-hour training session on "What You Need to Know About Intimate Partner Violence" is part of the Women's Centers efforts to target victim advocacy on campus. The Women's center, Campus UPD, and Life Services and Wellness have combined efforts to address Victim Advocacy issues. Look for more information throughout the fall semester.

UPWARD BOUND MATH & SCIENCE COMPLETES OUTSTANDING SUMMER PROGRAM
The Upward Bound Math & Science program completed the summer component from June 4-July 13 with 47 students from across Texas and one student from Puerto Rico. The students participated in hands-on research in the fields of Biology, Bio-Medical, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math and Mechanical Engineering. The UBMS program goal was to increase the number of low-income and first-generation college students traditionally underrepresented in institutions of higher education to: (1) achieve substantial math, science, and computer literacy skills (2) declare math, science, computer science, or engineering as a major when enrolling in the college of their choice (3) receive bachelor degrees in math, science, computer science, or engineering (4) enter career fields requiring substantial high level preparation in math, science, computer science, or engineering (5) receive potential to achieve a Ph.D. in math, science, computer science, or engineering.

During the six week residential stay at Texas A&M-Kingsville, several services were offered to the UBMS students including tutoring, diagnostic testing, career and personal counseling, academic skill enhancement, test-taking skills, parent involvement, college admissions/financial aid, course selection for academic year, standardized tests, mentoring program, intensive math/science instruction, seminars/workshops, academic advisement, and social events.

At the end of the six-week component the students were given an award and recognition banquet. The students presented their research projects in front of faculty, staff and other guests.

The 3-year long acquisition of Marriot Management Services by Sodexho is finally complete, and the name change has taken place. You will see few changes on campus besides our bright new uniforms, but we will be trying hard to spread the news about Sodexho - we have a new name for Food Service, but the people have stayed the same! If you have any questions, please call Steve Kauf - General Manager - Sodexho at 593-3117.
