WHAT IS THE WEST NILE VIRUS? HEALTH UPDATE FROM LIFE SERVICES & WELLNESS
West Nile is a mosquito-born virus that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord). It is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. A mosquito becomes infected by biting a bird that carries the virus. You or your child cannot get West Nile virus from a person who has the disease. West Nile virus is not spread by person-to-person contact such as touching, kissing, or caring for someone who is infected. Most people who are infected with the virus either have no symptoms or experience mild illness such as fever, headache, and body aches before fully recovering. Some persons may also develop a mild rash or swollen lymph glands. In some individuals, particularly the elderly, West Nile virus can cause disease that affects the brain tissue. If illness were to occur, it would within 3 to 15 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. Patients with mild symptoms should recover completely and do not require any specific medication or laboratory testing. There is no specific therapy. In more severe cases, intensive supportive therapy is required, i.e., hospitalization, intravenous (IV) fluids and nutrition, airway management, ventilatory support (ventilator) if needed, prevention of secondary infections (pneumonia, urinary tract, etc.), and good nursing care. Fewer than 1 in 1,000 people infected with West Nile virus die. At the present a vaccine for West Nile virus does not exist. There are no reports of the virus in Kleberg County.

For more information about West Nile virus, contact Life Services & Wellness at x2904.

JAVELINA EXPRESS CARDS NEARLY 500 FACULTY & STAFF - READY FOR STUDENTS
Staff & faculty have one last chance to win $300 in Sodexho Bonus Bucks - but you must sign up and get your ID card by Friday, August 23. Bonus Bucks are better than cash and are used in any of the dining facilities. The winners so far are Salvador Franco from the University Police Department, Susan Brubaker from the Procurement Office, and Patricia Marin from the Business Office. So...hang out with these folks for lunch next week!

In preparation for recarding all students the ID Card office has temporarily obtained two additional machines and printers, for a total of three. This enables the department to card nearly 1,000 students a day. Upon arrival to campus students will be asked to obtain their card immediately in SUB 219ABC. Students will be required to have their card by August 29. Beginning Saturday, August 24 until Friday August, 29, the ID Card office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Javelina Express Card combines the ID card with the library and food service cards. In later months the card will also serve as a campus cash/key card allowing the holder to use vending machines, copy machines, enter exterior doors, purchase bookstore items, and ultimately purchase items from selected off campus vendors. For more information on the Javelina Express Card contact Ms. Barbara Collins, ID Card Office Coordinator at x3506.

ANNUAL MOVE-IN DAY SET - SATURDAY & SUNDAY AUGUST 24-25 - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Faculty and staff, neighbors and friends are invited to volunteer in the annual "Move-in Day." Over 125 have already volunteered. Move-in Day is when faculty & staff assist students and parents move their belongings into the residence halls. It is a fantastic way to meet the many new students and their parents. This year there are three shifts: Saturday, August 24 from 8:00 -11:30 a.m. and 11:30 - 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 25 from 11:00 - 2:00 p.m. More volunteers are needed for Sunday.

Sodexho will provide a welcome lunch for the students, their families, and all who assist. A t-shirt will be available for those that volunteer a complete shift. The Move-In headquarters will be in front of Turner-Bishop Residence Hall. To volunteer, please contact Becky Maez x2166.

STUDENT AFFAIRS HOSTS VP SUMMIT
On September 6, A&M-Kingsville Student Affairs will host the first South Texas Student Affairs VP Summit. The purpose of the summit is to bring together the senior student affairs officers from all South Texas universities to discuss common issues affecting each institution. Some topics include student leadership training, RA/student leader conferences, staff development, staff education and advanced degree opportunities, the creation of a South Texas Student Development Journal, legislative agendas, leader forums, traditions or rivalries, service agreements (Sodexho/ARAMARK, Bookstores, and Vending - Soft Drinks), hurricane or crisis protocols, labor unions, and roles with community and technical colleges. This is the first of several meetings that may take place over the coming semesters. The participants are Dr. John Edwards, vice president for student affairs & enrollment management at UT-Pan American, Dr. Eliot Chenaux, vice president for student affairs at A&M-Corpus Christi, Dr. Hilda Silva, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs at UT-Brownsville, Dr. Thomas Corti, dean of students at A&M-International, and Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr, associate vice president for student affairs at A&M-Kingsville.
MENTORS STILL NEEDED
If you haven't indicated your interest in being a mentor at this time, please contact Barry McKinney or Colleen Brown at x2760. They will take the necessary information to pair you with a first-year student.

The Javelina Mentor Program is designed to enhance student involvement and increase student success and retention. Students will be matched with a faculty/staff mentor who will assist the student in transition to the University. This will be accomplished by offering insights into campus opportunities, providing information about organizations and activities, assisting in identifying educational goals, enhancing awareness of campus services, and providing direction or referrals to assist students in their academic endeavors. The mentor relationship is designed to last for the first semester, but we hope the relationship will extend beyond that time.

Requirements are to attend a mentor reception/information session, then meet a minimum of 4 times during the course of the semester with the mentee. Suggested items to review will be provided for each of the four sessions. The department will match all students by the conclusion of the first week of school so please respond as soon as possible.

9-11 PROGRAM -- FACES OF AMERICA
On September 11 the Campus Activities Board, in conjunction with the Department of Student Activities, will present a 9-11 tribute and Faces of America! The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. Faces of America is a one-person show addressing the questions of multiculturalism in today's society. The play presents eight characters all based on true stories researched through workshops and interviews with high school and college age populations. Preceding the performance will be a special university program acknowledging pride in the United States and all who have been touched by events of 9-11. Look for more information in next weeks Enews!
CAMPUS HOUSING COLLABORATES WITH UPD AND NAS TO PREPARE STUDENT RESIDENT ADVISORS
On Saturday, August 17 during the Resident Advisor (RA) Training, Campus Housing and the University Police Department met together with NAS Kingsville for a mixer and dinner. The event gave the Resident Advisors an opportunity to meet the officers and dispatchers and ask them questions. Both groups gained insight on the others duties and responsibilities. NAS Kingsville brought in two of the detection canines. The RA's learned about how the dogs are trained and how they respond to different commands. The event ended with a presentation on how the dogs attack. Joining the training sessions throughout the weekend was the Living Learning Community. The event was a success and a foundation of teamwork and collaboration was formed.
FALL CAMP PROGRAM UNDERWAY
The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) for the fall 2002 semester is under way. Forty-four of the 50 selected students were present for orientation. The CAMP staff and Special Programs Director were introduced to the incoming freshmen students. Dr. David Braverman, dean of students, and Jo-Elda Castillo-Alaniz, assistant director of student activities, also made presentations to welcome the new students to campus. College I staff was also on hand to register those students who had not yet attended Hoggie Days. The Housing Office is working to provide the students with rooms in the residence halls and Sodexho is accommodating the students for the meals. The CAMP Orientation continued through Friday, August 23, with students moving in over the weekend and participating in the Welcome Week 2002 activities.
"HELLO" PROJECT CONTINUES - CAMPUS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE
It is amazing the number of people that will talk to you with a smile and hello. During the fall semester the Student Affairs staff are once again trying to "greet" every faculty, staff, and student as we all cross campus. Rather than walking by individuals without a simple "hello" the staff are making a point to try and greet all we pass. You are invited to join the student affairs division in the "Hello" Project. As you walk across campus try and say hello to all those you pass.

STUDENT AFFAIRS CHANGES USE PERSONNEL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
In the past months, several changes and shifting of personnel have occurred. Long time employee Joe Cusack has become the Assistant to the Dean of Students and now oversees all postal operations, continues to assist with vending revenue, and assists the Dean of Students with several construction and renovation projects. Nino Mendietta is now the Associate Director of the Student Union and oversees all Union operations including scheduling, technical services, master plan, retail services, and ID card operations (with Barbara Collins). A search continues to select a Director of the Student Union and Activities. It is expected to be completed early this semester.

One of the most demanded services is personal counseling. Creative redirection of existing FTEs has resulted in a very needed position - another Professional Counselor. Over 80% of the students that received personal counseling within a semester return the following semester. Skilled counselors help students and families keep in perspective what is most important during difficult times. For more information on A&M-Kingsville's counseling services, please contact Dr. Dianne Brown at x3991.

NOMINATIONS BEING SOUGHT FOR THE SECOND ANNUAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
The second annual A&M-Kingsville Women's Leadership Institute will be held this fall and is currently seeking nominations. The Institute, which was created last year as a joint program between the Women's Center and Student Activities, is meant to provide additional leadership development for A&M-Kingsville students. The Institute is designed to allow women student leaders to connect with one another, the university, and society.

Induction into the Institute is open, but preference is given to sophomore and junior women who have demonstrated leadership potential. If you know of a woman leader who would benefit from this experience, or for additional information, please e-mail the student's name, current local address, current local phone number, and e-mail address to Becky Maez no later than September 9.
