JAVELINA EXPRESS CARD NEARLY READY FOR USE
During the spring 2002 semester campus decided to invest in a campus-wide "one-card." This card would combine the ID card with the library and food service cards. In later months the card would also serve as a campus cash/key card allowing the holder to use vending machines, copy machines, enter exterior doors, purchase bookstore items, and ultimately purchase items from selected off campus vendors. The company awarded the project was Blackboard.

Since the awarding of the project a campus committee has been working daily at installing and implementing the card. On Thursday and Friday, July 11-12, Blackboard trained four staff on the installation of campus readers (these read the cards at checkout counters in the SUB). During the week of July 29 or August 5, Blackboard will train several personnel on the use of the software. Once completed, the installation of the "one-card" will be done and ready for campus use.

The Javelina Express Card committee is currently finalizing plans for carding faculty, staff, and students. The new cards are expected to arrive mid August. Several incentives will be offered to inspire the campus community to obtain the new card. Use of the new card will be expected in the library and dining halls early September. Look for more information in an upcoming Enews or contact Ms. Barbara Collins, ID Card Office Coordinator at x3506.

HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE - CAMPUS PROCEDURES ONLINE FOR VIEWING
Now is the time hurricanes commonly strike the Coastal Bend area. In the unlikely event campus needs to mobilize as a result of a hurricane this season, all faculty and staff are asked to review in advance the hurricane procedures available online. For more information on hurricane procedures or the Crisis Management Team, please contact the co-chairs Oscar Castillo, associate vp for support services at x2645 or Tom Jackson, Jr., associate vp for student affairs at x3612.
51ST AIR FORCE BAND PERFORMS IN JONES AUDITORIUM
The 531st Air Force Band, Texas Air National Guard, under the command of Lt. Jeffrey C. Matthews performed at Jones Auditorium on July 11. The band is designated by the governor as the "Official Band of Texas." Approximately 150 were present for the free event. The twenty member jazz band played many big band and jazz tunes and received two standing ovations.
SUB RENOVATION TO BRING NEW RETAIL OUTLETS
The Student Union Building is expected to undergo minor renovations during the fall semester. The renovation will convert some first floor office space into retail spaces, allowing the facility to better serve student and faculty requests for more dining options and services. An artists rendition of the project may be viewed by clicking here .

The project will likely take two phases. During the first phase (Fall 2002) the first floor offices on the west side will be converted to open areas that will support SubConnection, Brewster's Coffee, and Freshen's Yogurt. SubConnection will provide subway sandwiches and snacks, Brewster's will provide different coffees and pastries, and Freshen's Yogurt will provide several yogurt flavors and cookies. Additionally, the ID Card office will be redesigned to accommodate the new demand generated from the Javelina Express Card and a Information Desk will be created to help campus guests obtain information about activities taking place in the SUB and throughout the campus. The new retail outlets are expected to open Spring 2003. This project was funded by Sodexho.

The second phase will modify areas on the east side of the first floor. A storage area near the Pizza Hut will be converted into a convenience store and the Pizza Hut will expand outward to match the design of the other retail outlets. All outlets will use and accept the new Javelina Express Card once the second phase of that project is completed. For more information on the SUB renovation projects, please contact Mr. Nino Mendietta, associate director of SUB operations.
