ENEWS RETURNS - WAHOO!
The popular electronic newsletter for Student Affairs has returned with the same happy look and still filled with information. "We just needed to better promote many of the activities taking place within the division campus wide. This worked very well three years ago and hopefully we will be able to sustain it throughout the academic year," stated Tom Jackson, vice president for student affairs. ENEWS will be a bi-weekly newsletter rather than the weekly it was originally. Look for contests, promotional "hurry up and show up" ideas, and great news about things helping students.
DR. DAVID BRAVERMAN ACCEPTS NEW SENIOR POST
Dr. David G. Braverman, dean of students at TAMUK, has accepted the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students position at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He will begin August 1.
At Springfield College Dr. Braverman will be responsible for the oversight of student affairs. This position provides leadership to student activities, campus ministries, student support services, multicultural activities, residence life, career services, student organization and leadership programs, judicial affairs, health and counseling services, drug and alcohol education, new student orientation, and student government. Dr. Braverman will have a significant role in the planning and programming for a new college union.
"I am really excited about this opportunity. I always wondered how my life would change when I became a VP. I guess I am about to find out," says Braverman. Tom Jackson, his colleague for the past three years adds, "Dr. Braverman was a fantastic dean. His ability to connect to students and stay focused on serving students was a real asset. TAMUK will miss his insight, humor, and genuine perspective."
SGA AND STUDENT GROUPS SPONSOR AMERICANS UNITED FOR GULF SECURITY
U.S. Congressman Solomon Ortiz has tapped the shoulder of Texas A&M-Kingsville to assist in combating the Naval Base
closure at Ingleside, Texas as proposed by the U.S. Department of Defense. Petitions have been distributed to A&M-Kingsville so
our voice may be presented to top federal officials concerning this issue. For more information see the annoucement prepared
by the student leaders by clicking this PDF link www.tamuk.edu/sass/enews/sga1.pdf .
HOGGIE DAYS MAY POSITIVELY IMPACT STUDENT RETENTION
The data for students who enrolled at TAMUK in Fall 2003 and returned in Fall 2004 shows Hoggie Days may be having a positive impact on retention. Of those students that attended Hoggie Days, 56% were retained for the academic year, whereas only 40% were retained that did not attend Hoggie Days. 90% of students surveyed during the first three Hoggie Days sessions of 2005 say they feel better about this university because they attended Hoggie Days and 93% say they are more confident about making a successful transition to A&M-Kingsville.
EVERY JAVELINA IS A RECRUITER
Join the "Every Javelina is a Recruiter" campaign by sharing your positive TAMUK experiences with friends and colleagues. Would you like Campus Outreach to visit your high school alma mater and speak to the students about A&M-Kingsville? Give Outreach a call at x3907 or email Laura Knippers. Recruit a Javelina!
GOLF SCRAMBLE SET FOR SUMMER FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS
Dust off the golf clubs and join Recreational Sports for a summer golf scramble at L.E. Ramey Golf Course. Every Friday (except July 1) at 1:00 p.m. join faculty, staff, and students for a shotgun start golf scramble. This is a perfect opportunity to support sunscreen products and have no lines at the golf course. The scramble will be nine holes, best hole. Arrive by 12:45 p.m. and whoever shows up will be put on twosomes or foursomes. Create your own team if you want. The cost has not been set but will include a cart and green fees. Just show up, pay, play, and then tell golf stories afterward in the clubhouse. For more information contact Charles Espinoza at x3057. See you there!
PROJECTGRAD BROWNSVILLE GRANT PROVIDES SUMMER BRIDGE FOR NEW STUDENTS
TAMUK is hosting summer institutes for ProjectGRAD Brownsville for 100 students during summer 2005. The two two-week institutes (50 students each) introduces incoming 11th grade students to university life. Various departments and faculty have come together to conduct workshops and expose students to the sciences. The total contract amount is $67,500.
DR. MAGGIE WILLIAMS ACCEPTS POSITION AT UT-PAN AMERICAN
Dr. Magdalena “Maggie” Williams, registrar and director of admissions at TAMUK, has accepted the Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Services position at the University of Texas-Pan American. She will begin her new position July 18.
At UT-Pan Am Dr. Williams will be responsible for the oversight of the admissions office and all outreach activities. The University of Texas-Pan Am is one of the fastest growing institutions in the Valley. Dr. Williams will provide leadership to two departments that are essential to the sustained growth of the university.
"It has been an honor and pleasure to serve A&M-Kingsville the last five years. I have some wonderful memories and will always consider A&M-Kingsville my home and myself a part of the Javelina family," states Dr. Williams. Mr. Frank Ureno adds, "Maggie has been instrumental in affecting change in the offices of the registrar and admissions. Through her leadership she has improved processes in both offices that have led to a division of labor and cross training. We wish her much success in her new position."
STUDENT AFFAIRS DIRECTOR STAFF DISCUSSES DIVISION MORALE
Student Affairs Directors discussed morale at a recent staff meeting. Staff appear tired, a bit burned out, and in need of a few morale boosters. The directors talked about causes (or things that may be bringing staff to this point) and ideas or ways to potentially get staff away from this point. Lack of state funding, flat enrollment, and issues from the past year were some of the contributors listed. Communication, socials, and increased contact among the staff would contribute to more positive morale. The Friday after work golf scramble, listed earlier in this newsletter, and E-News were two ideas generated from this discussion.
