SPECIAL PROGRAMS AWARDED MILLION DOLLAR GRANT
Special Programs, under the supervision of Ms. Mary Gonzalez, has been awarded an Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) five year grant for $950,000. This grant now gives A&M-Kingsville five of the seven TRIO programs funded by the federal government and nine total grants in the department with resources over three million annually. A&M-Kingsville is the only comprehensive university in Texas to have received an EOC grant.

The EOC grant provides postsecondary education, training information, and application assistance to 800 low-income, first generation college bound adults in Jim Wells, Duval, Brooks, Kleberg, Nueces, and Starr counties. The primary focus of the grant will be in assisting adults that have stopped or dropped out of school. The EOC will form collaborative agreements and/or partnerships with public and social service agencies in the targeted counties. For information on what opportunities will be available through the EOC grant, please contact Ms. Mary Gonzalez, director of special programs, at x2708.

JAVELINA EXPRESS CARD INSTALLATION ON SCHEDULE
During the spring 2002 semester campus decided to invest in a campus-wide "one-card." This card would combine the ID card with the library and food service cards. In later years the card would also serve as a campus debit card allowing the holder to use vending machines, copy machines, enter exterior doors, or purchase bookstore items without carrying cash. The company awarded the project was Blackboard.

Since the awarding of the project a campus committee has been working daily at installing and implementing the card. On Monday, June 10, Blackboard conducted their first visit with A&M-Kingsville. In great detail, items regarding the card system, information needed, hardware locations, and food service meal plans were discussed. At the core of the service is an HP server and proprietary software. Completion date is anticipated late July. More information will be provided as the date approaches. If you have questions please contact Dr. Tom Jackson Jr. at x3612.

ELECTRIC CONTROL PANEL IN SUB BURNS
On Tuesday, June 11 at approximately 9:50 p.m., Ruben Amador, a Custodian in the Student Union Building (SUB), smelled a burning odor in the SUB. The University Police Department was contacted and firefighters dispatched who later isolated the smell in the storage room of the Bookstore. Upon inspection a control panel for an air handler system had overloaded, causing wires to burn. Silver Chapa, an Electrician in Support Services, promptly secured the system. No cause of the short has been determined at this time. A BIG thanks goes to Mr. Amador for his prompt action.
A&M-KINGSVILLE TO HOST REGIONAL COMMUNITY LEADER'S RETREAT
A&M-Kingsville will host the Regional Community Leader's Forum joint retreat on campus Thursday, June 20 beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Conner Museum. Over the last academic year several different groups (Forums) have been held in the Valley, Coastal bend, Bryan/College Station, and Prairie View. Participants generally are city managers, superintendents, university leaders, non-profit executive directors, mayors, community representatives, and other leaders within a local community. During the monthly meetings discussions would center on regional issues such as transportation, health care, economic development, environment and natural resources, and several other topics or themes. This was an initiative of the Texas A&M System.

The retreat brings the leaders from different regions together for the first time in hopes of creating a common platform for the different communities to work together on issues affecting their region.

Recreational Sports is hosting the Staff/Faculty Golf League beginning July 27 at 5:30 p.m. at L.E. Ramey Golf Course.
