GALE SAYERS SPEAKS ON COMMITMENT AND FAMILY
Gale Sayers, NFL Hall of Fame halfback and now successful businessman spoke to a near capacity crowd in Jones Auditorium on Thursday, April 4. Approximately 750 were in attendance. The evening was precluded with a popular student leader and student athlete reception in McCulley Hall and a private Presidential Reception/Dinner in the SUB hosting over 110 guests. Sayers spoke about the impact of George Halas, the legendary football coach of the Chicago Bears, his relationship with Brian Piccolo, the importance and differences between role models and heroes, the role of parents, the change of professional sports (for the worse) and the importance of education. He stressed to everyone to complete the education. Sayers is the CEO of the Sayers Group, a national technology solutions provider with locations across the United States and revenues of more than $300 million.
COUNTRY SUPERSTARS CHARLIE ROBISON AND CHRIS CAGLE PLAY TO LARGE SPEC CROWD
On April 5 the campus will play host to Nashville Recording Artists Charlie Robison and Chris Cagle. The concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for everyone else. Cagle has recently had three top-ten hits including "My Love Goes On and On" and "Laredo." Currently "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out," is #1 on the Billboard charts. Tickets are available in the Student Activities Office and the CactusFlower in Kingsville. Tickets in the Corpus Christi area can be purchased at The Cellular Store in Calallen and Boots N Britches on McArdle. Valley outlets are Lionel's Western Wear and Boots n Jeans in Weslaco. Tickets can be purchased online or by telephone through Star Tickets at www.startickets.com or 1-888-597-STAR.
BAPTIST STUDENTS HOST BARBER LECTURES APRIL 7-10
The Baptist Student Ministry is hosting the Barber Lectures from April 7-10 in the University Baptist Church. Featuring Dr. M. Thomas Starkes, the lectures will focus on several topics and themes such as "Missions as Vocations," the "Occult," and contemporary cults (as he suggests) such as Scientology and Jehovah's Witnesses.

Dr. Starkes earned a Ph.D. in American Church History and Eastern Religions at University of Iowa. He has done Postdoctoral Study at the University of Wisconsin in African Studies and Postdoctoral Studies in Ogbomosho, Nigeria in African Traditional Religions. Dr. Starkes is currently Pastor of Tropicana Christian Fellowship, Las Vegas, NV. He also is Chaplain to ten casinos and Chaplain for the UNLV Running Lobos' athletic teams. CAMPUS HOUSING CONTINUES TO OFFER STRONG PROGRAMMING SCHEDULE
  1. Turner Hall Resident Advisors Josue Hernandez and Eddie Olivarez hosted an educational program titled "Health and Fitness" on April 1. The program was an exercise in sorting the different food groups into the food pyramid. The guest speaker was Juan Garcia who spoke on fitness and explained the importance of stretching, demonstrated some exercises and told of the benefits of doing physical activity. Fourteen people attended the educational where flautes, chips, dips, and fruit juice were served as refreshments.
  2. Turner Hall Resident Advisors Daniel Cordova and Jonathon Otto hosted an educational program titled "The Truth About Stereotyping" on April 2. The program included a group discussion on the different types of stereotyping. Benjamin Noonan of the Athletic Department spoke on different types of stereotyping with emphasis on student athletes. Chips, dips, and juice were served to the 19 people in attendance
  3. Martin Hall Resident Advisors Charlie Ybarra and Arnold Saucedo hosted the educational program titled "How to Have a Healthy College Life" on March 27 in the Martin Hall Lobby. Gloria VanZandt was the guest speaker and she spoke to 18 residents from Martin Hall.
  4. Campus Housing will be hosting "Fun in the Sun" on Wednesday, April 24 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The festivities will be held on University Boulevard and will feature live entertainment, games, prizes and lots and lots of fun. Sodexho will serve dinner outside on the day of the event. Those without a meal card can pay $5.00 to eat.
  5. On April 2 there was a great presentation on the Humane Society. A representative from The Gulf Coast Humane Society talked to the students about how the facilities work and discussed the difference between their operation and Animal Control. The speaker also talked about how to choose the right pet for a family.

STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFERS FACULTY/STAFF INCENTIVE
The first faculty member (and staff member) to have read this far in Enews and reply back to Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. (via email) will receive lunch for two at the Javelina Cafe.
