BLACK HERITAGE MONTH BEGINS WITH FULL SLATE OF ACTIVITIES

BLACK HERITAGE BANQUET TICKETS
Tickets remain on sale for the Black Heritage Banquet. The banquet will be held on Saturday, February 17th at 7:00 p.m. The Keynote Speaker is Colonel Retired Henry E. Hodge, TRW Program Manager, Department of Defense. If you are interested in attending or would like to sponsor a student, tickets can be purchased at the Student Activities Office or contact Barbara Collins at ext. 2792 or Millie Slaughter at ext. 4350. February 21, there will be a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Club of NAS Kingsville. Cecil Carter will be the keynote speaker and performer. He is a jazz piano player. Tickets ($5.50) can be obtained from Co-Chair Millie Slaughter. Call ext 4350. We'll deliver to your office. February 24, there will be a picnic at Thompson Park. We will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs and it is FREE. We are working with the Kingsville Kleberg County Parks Department who will be hosting a Basketball Tournament. February 28, the Coffe House will have a keynote speaker: Tammi Griffin.


NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK BEGINS
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is February 25-March 4, 2001. The theme is "Every Body is Beautiful!" This theme is highlighted by a brand new, colorful, artistic poster, which portrays a diverse array of individuals dancing to celebrate their natural sizes. With the "Every Body is Beautiful" poster and theme, EDAP is beginning to address the impact that body dissatisfaction and disordered eating has on individuals from various racial and ethnic groups. Life Services and Wellness is committed to expanding our outreach efforts to be inclusive of all individuals! *Please Note: Screenings will be available all week at the LSW, Counseling offices. Please come by! Also, we will set up a display in the SUB Lobby on Wednesday Feb. 28th and free screenings will be available.
UNPOLITICALLY CORRECT STUDENT FORUM STARTS THURSDAY
A free speech student forum kicks off this Thursday, February 15th at 12:30 pm at the SUB Free Speech Zone. This is located in the mall area. A structured forum similar to an open mike, students with an opinion may positively express their viewpoints on a specific subject each week. The first week's topic is "Gay Rights and Civil Unions." The following week the topic will be "Banning Alcohol on Campus." This program is sponsored by the Student Government Association and Student Activities.
MARIACHI FESTIVAL AT JONES AUDITORIUM
The 3rd Annual Mariachi Festival will be held at Jones Auditorium on Friday, February 16th. Campanas de America from San Antonio will headline the festival. Other groups performing include Mariachi Palomino from Palo Alto College, Mariachi Javelina from Texas A&M-Kingsville and two area high school mariachis, Cristal from Miller High School in Corpus Christi and Del Rey from H.M. King High in Kingsville. Campanas de America is led by Juan Ortiz, an alumnus, who founded Mariachi Javelina while here at Texas A&I University. Tickets are $2 for students, $5 for faculty and staff, and $7 general admission. All tickets at the door are $10. Tickets are available at the Conner Museum and the Office of Student Activities. The festival is held annually during the Ranching Heritage Festival as is sponsored by the Hispanic Heritage Committee and the Office of Student Activities.
LIFE SERVICES & WELLNESS NEWS
Note Taker Positions Available! Student volunteers wanted at the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities to help registered students enhance their educational endeavors and classroom learning accessibility. Position: Volunteer Note Taker/Lab Aid/Reader Contact: Esperanza Cavazos at 361-593-3024. Responsibilities: Assist students who have disabilities with not taking/lab assignments/reading in class during the semester. Communicate regularly as needed with students to foster a positive enriching classroom experience. Become paired in a one-to-one friendship with a student who has a disability to encourage ongoing academic success. Requirements: Must be an enrolled student either part time or full time Must be an independent, well organized individual Must be willing to work with people who have a disability. ***This may count toward community service, internship, etc….ask me how!!*** Testing Services: G. Paris-Ealy, Director of the GED Unit in Austin, toured out testing center during a monitoring visit in October. Texas A&M University-Kingsville testing site was compliant with TEA's standards. Her comments included: · Testing facility is excellent and has an outstanding outreach program, such as student packets and letters mailed to students advising them of their status and, if necessary, to return to TAMUK's Testing site to complete their GED Testing. · The newspaper articles and advertisements we submit, inform examinees of upcoming GED exam changes for the year 2002. This is an excellent marketing tool for TAMUK! · She thanked us for doing our part to make the Texas GED testing program the best it can be! Health Clinic: Flu Shots are still available at the Clinic!
