STUDENT REFERENDUM TUESDAY - FOUR PROPOSED FEE INCREASES TO BE VOTED UPON
On Tuesday, February 12, there is a student referendum for four proposed student fee increases. Students may vote at the SUB all day from 8:00 - 5:00 p.m. The different fees and a short explanation are as follows: Health Fee from $30 to $45/semester -- This would raise the available resources funding the Student Health Center. The Health Center currently operates at a deficit because of continued rising costs associated with health care in general. Student Service Fees from $16 to $20/semester hour -- This would increase available resources for student service fee funded programs such as Student Government, Student Activities, Student Organizations, Art, Band, KTAI, etc. International Education from $1 to $2/semester -- This fee primarily funds student scholarships for student study abroad opportunities for currently enrolled students. Fine Arts (Theatre Arts) fee of $3/semester -- This establishes a new fee to support the renovation and improvement of specific theatre arts programs and services.

The Student Senate voted January 22 to raise the state legislated student service fee cap from $150 to $250.

WOMEN'S CENTER SPONSORS MINI-CONFERENCE FOR DADS
"Fatherhood Secrets: Becoming the best dad you can be" will be held in the SUB on February 12 from 8:30 - 1:30 p.m. and includes three breakout sessions. Sample topics include learning the myths and barriers that keep men from being the father they want to be and forming lifetime bonds with your child. This event is the first of its kind sponsored by the A&M-Kingsville Women's Center. The conference is open to the public. For more information, please contact Becky Maez at x2166
NEW DEAN OF STUDENTS RECEPTION MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18
Dean of Students, Dr. David Braverman, officially joins A&M-Kingsville February 11. A coffee & continental breakfast welcoming him to campus is scheduled for Monday, February 18 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. in SUB 219C. As your time permits, please join the campus community in meeting him.

The Dean of Students serves as an advocate for students and facilitates their progress as they embark on and transition into the higher education arena. The Dean is often the student link between administration and faculty. One day the dean is helping a student succeed and the next they may be sanctioning that same student for a conduct violation. The TAMUK Dean of Students oversees several major department functions (Student Union & Activities, Sodexho, Barnes & Noble, Post Office, Fraternities & Sororities, Clubs and Organizations, Cheerleaders, Recreational Sports, Student Handbook, One-Card ID System, Student Leadership Programs, Student Awards, Student Community Service Programs, Women's Center, and Student Conduct) and is a member of the President's Executive Council.

CAMPUS HOUSING TURNS OUT STRONG FOR AMERICAN HEART WALK
The Campus Housing Staff participated in the American Heart Walk held on February 2 as part of the All Staff Training Weekend. Approximately 70 Resident Advisors, Hall Directors, and Housing Staff members showed up to walk for the Campus Housing Team. The student staff did a great job collecting $1,271 for the Heart Association. Bishop Hall Resident Advisors Jeanette Adams raised $610 and Patty Vazquez raised $280. Campus Housing also sponsored their own in house competition giving the Resident Advisor who received the most donations a Television and DVD player. Jeanette Adams was the winner of this prize. It was a great way to begin our Saturday training with the warm up and walk. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves despite the colder weather, and everyone was able to finish the walk.
CAREER SERVICES HOSTS BUSINESS ETIQUETTE DINNER
The Career Services Center will host the Business Etiquette Dinner on Tuesday, February 19 from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the SUB Ballrooms. Last fall the dinner sold out at 275 students! Tickets may be purchased in advance for $5.00 in Eckhardt Hall Room 102. All students are invited to attend and learn more about the art of fine dining. A professional speaker will discuss the do's and don'ts of business etiquette and participants will have the opportunity to experience first-hand the reality of meeting and greeting strangers, interviewing and eating, and having a good time!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR GALE SAYERS - HALL OF FAMER IN LIFE AND BUSINESS
Gale Sayers, the legendary football star portrayed in the movie "Brian's Song" with Billy Dee Williams and James Caan, will be on campus for the annual lectureship series. Mr. Sayers has a storied football career and international technology business (www.sayers.com). Mr. Sayers will speak on Thursday, April 4. CAMPUS HOUSING HOSTS AWESOME SUPERBOWL PARTIES
Super Bowl parties were held in each residence hall lobby on the night of the big game. The hall staff decorated the lobbies, helped serve the food, and held contests during the event. Students were treated to submarine sandwiches, nachos, popcorn, chips, dips, veggies, brownies, and lemonade. Sodexho provided the food and Campus Housing the door prizes. Over 380 students were in attendance to cheer for their favorite team. You read that correctly - 380 residents. Way cool!
MCNAIR SCHOLAR SELECTED FOR EUROPE SCHOLARSHIPS
We are very proud of McNair Scholar, Bigh Nhat(BN)Tran Le for being selected to represent Texas A&M University-Kingsville, the McNair Scholars Program, and the Texas Association of Student Special Services Program to Europe as a great ambassador. This is part of the TRIO 2002 Shared Journeys: Multiculturism in Europe, A three-week Accredited Study Tour. BN has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Texas Association of Student Special Services Programs and $750 from the TRIO regional Southwest Association of Student Special Services Program. Scholars throughout the Texas region competed for this scholarship by submitting an essay of their interest in studying aboard. Congrats to BN.
STUDENTS HOST MOVIE SOCIAL IN HALLS
This week Lewis Hall had a Movie Night Social hosted by Nasik Islam and Jason Domino. It was held on Monday, February 4 at 7 p.m. Nasik and Jason made up a video with clips from the most recent movies. At the end of the 3 min tape, the residents had to write down the title of as many movies they could remember. The tape had a total of 25 movie clips. The residents were really involved in this activity. The other activity held was filling out a crossroad puzzle with titles of movies. The winner of each event got a prize. The students had plenty of chips, dips, popcorn and drinks just like at the movies. The walls were decorated with movie posters that were collected from some of their fellow RAs. The program went well and the residents enjoyed it.
