PREACHER PREACHES IN FREE SPEECH ZONE
A local man emotionally charged the student body the past two days with his biblical sermon and viewpoints in the free speech area on campus. Located in the mall area, the free speech zone has been seldom used the past few years. Although a common occurrence at UT-Austin, the message preached often challenged students' viewpoints and comfort levels. Well within the law, the individual has a first amendment right to articulate his viewpoint within this free speech zone - with a few limitations. There is a teachable moment here - this opens the door for all faculty and staff to teach students how to disagree with a strong individual viewpoint without becoming emotional or angry with the individual. Over 200 students stood and watched for hours. With that type of audience it is expected he will continue to return.

MODERN DAY HOUDINI PERFORMS
"I swear he tore that newspaper up," said one person from the audience. Then she added, "How did he untie himself so fast, right in front of our eyes?" Last Tuesday the Kingsville community was dazzled by the magic of Kevin and Cindy Spencer. Over one hundred fifty guests witnessed unbelievable illusions that left them captivated. The Spencer's are award-winning entertainers that have taken the art of illusion to new heights. Touring throughout the United States, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia they have earned rave reviews and several awards including Performing Arts Entertainers of the Year, Entertainers of the Year, Best Major Performance and Best Touring Production.

CLASSROOM ACCOMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Recently the LSW department has had a number of questions of how best to accommodate students with disabilities in the classroom. Generally the instructor should make an announcement at the beginning of the semester informing students that he or she is available to assist with classroom accommodation. Otherwise, the student is responsible for approaching the instructor about his or her needs. An agreement between professor and student regarding classroom accommodation should be reached early in the semester. Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD Office) is available for consultation if any questions or problems arise. **Positive Communication Tip: Include the following on the course syllabus and/or announce it during the first class meeting. "Students with disabilities, including learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Services for Students with
Disabilities office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodations must provide documentation of his/her disability to the SSD
coordinator. For more information, call 593-3024 or visit Life Services and Wellness at 1210 Retama Drive.
