HATS OFF TO THE UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENT
On Friday, November 3, 2000 Mrs. Micky Graham came to UPD and reported her
husband, Dr. Joe Graham (who suffers with Alzheimer Disease) missing for an
unusual amount of time. Dispatcher, Kathy Chisholm, immediately forwarded this
information on to Sergeant Hiram Perez. While Sgt. Perez questioned people in
the area that might have seen Dr. Graham and checked the surrounding areas,
Dispatcher Chisholm informed the Kingsville Radio Station 91.1 and other officers
and other agencies of the situation. At 9:42 pm Dr. Graham was found lying face down
in the mud in a field. An ambulance was called and Dr. Graham was transported to Spohn Hospital in Corpus
Christi. Dr. Graham's lungs had collapsed and the doctor told
Mrs. Graham that if Dr. Graham had stayed in the field any longer he might have
asphyxiated and died. Mrs. Graham feels that due to Dispatcher Chisholm's
diligence in getting the word out and Sgt. Perez's tenacity in looking for Dr.
Graham, this most assuredly saved his life. Hats off to UPD. Way to go, Blue!
"HELLO" PROJECT CONTINUES - CAMPUS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE
During the fall semester the Student Affairs staff have been trying to "greet" faculty, staff, and students as we all crossed campus. Rather than walking by individuals without a simple "hello" the staff made a point to try and greet all we passed. This, oddly, became difficult and uncomfortable. It shouldn't be. To further the effort, the student affairs division invites all students, faculty and staff to join in the "Hello" Project. As you walk across campus try and say hello to all those you pass...just like old times.
REC SPORTS STARTS SPRING EVENING TENNIS PROGRAM
Beginning January 22nd to April 26th the Rec Sports department is sponsoring a fun developmental tennis program. On Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 pm, all tennis players should meet at the tennis courts located northwest of the SPEC. Depending on the number of participants light drills, doubles, and singles play will be available. This is open to all adults in the 3.5-4.5 skill range. Cost is $5.00 a week ($20-25 per month). Balls are provided. Here is your opportunity to regularly play tennis with other tennis enthusiasts at your skill level. To participate, simply show up or contact Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. at 593-3612.
If you are a beginner (below 3.5) and interested in playing regularly, please contact the Recreational Sports department. If there is enough interest the department may sponsor a program.
LIFE SERVICES & WELLNESS INFORMATION
On Wednesday, January 17th the department will be providing flu Shots at the SUB from 11am - 1pm
(Free to Students, Faculty and Staff).
This past year the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) has made great
progress toward becoming a computer-based testing program. The computer-based
program will be finalized by July 1, 2001. TAMUK has signed a new agreement
which automatically allows us to be a CLEP computer-based testing(CBT) center. The administration of other ETS exams, such as the GRE under the ETS umbrella,
is separate from the CLEP and administration is pending approval from ETS for
TAMUK to become a computer-based site for these exams. When TAMUK is approved more information will be provided.
The search is on! Life Services and Wellness has two positions to fill. The department is currently looking for a new University Physician and a Nurse Practitioner. Salaries will be very competitive and negotiable, based on experience.
The closing date for the Nurse Practitioner position is January 18th and the
Physician position will remain open until the position is filled. Please
mention this to anyone who may be interested in joining our team! If they have questions please ask them to contact Ms. Connie Rojas-Najera, Interim Director.
