LECTURESHIP SERIES COMMITTEE SELECTS TAVIS SMILEY
Tavis Smiley has agreed to speak at the next Lectureship Series March 27, 2001. Mr. Smiley is a very popular host on the Black Entertainment Network (BET) and deemed by many as the voice of Black America. His political commentary can be heard on the nationally syndicated, Tom Joyner Morning Show (ABC Radio Networks), and on The Smiley Report syndicated by the American Urban Radio network. In addition to his broadcast work, Smiley is also the author of the critically acclaimed book, "HARD LEFT: Straight Talk About The Wrongs of the Right" and best selling book "DOING WHAT'S RIGHT: How to Fight for What You Believe and Make a Difference."

Known for his tough interviewing tactics and strong emphasis on issues concerning the African-American community, Time selected him as one of America's 50 most promising young leaders. Newsweek profiled him one of the "20 people changing how Americans get their news" and dubbed him one of the nation's "captains of the airwaves." The Los Angeles Times says he's on the "fast track, left lane." The Philadelphia Inquirer says Smiley's one of the most important political voices of his generation. Essence raves that his political writings "show us how to correct America's swerve to the right." And Buzz magazine rates him one of the "100 coolest people in Los Angeles." We are very fortunate to be bringing one of the most popular speakers in the country to campus.

Previous speakers in the Lectureship Series have included Mr. Edward James Olmos and Ms. Jane Elliott.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS REMOVED - GREAT SUCCESS
On Thursday, January 4th from 3:00-4:00 pm volunteers across campus (including physical plant, CIS, student affairs, and several other campus departments) removed the lights from the oaks and palm trees on campus. Campus and community comments have been extremely positive. Special thanks and recognition belongs to the following individuals and departments for their vision, leadership, money, hard work, and sweat: University President, Provost, and Finance VP; Oscar Castillo, Mike Foor, and the entire division of Support Services (with extra special thanks to the electricians); Rene Canales, Nino Mendietta, Vince Solis, Jo Elda Castillo-Alaniz, Crispin Trevino, Toni Alvarez, Dianne Brown and the rest of the Student Affairs division (with extra special thanks to Kimberly Benedict); Jill Willson, the coaches, and the hundreds of student athletes; and the dozens of students, staff, and faculty that could not be named that assisted throughout the process. Staff in each hall will distribute flyers announcing dates and times that Campus Police will be available in their hall to engrave their personal items and provide other theft prevention tips. Especially targeted will be those students who leave their doors unlocked when not in their rooms. Billy Knapp, Martin Hall Director and Mari Garcia, Bishop Hall Director, are coordinating the program.

Our prayers are with the Chef on his speedy recovery.
