Standards of Progress

A student receiving full or part-time veteran's education benefits, must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average on work taken.  Students who wish to receive veteran's benefits and who transfer from another institution without the required 2.0 GPA must visit the VA Representative in the Office of the Registrar before registering for classes to determine whether or not they are eligible for certification.  The scholastic status of a student receiving veteran's benefits can be changed by attending summer school and meeting the same standards that apply in the long semester.

NOTE: Benefits can be stopped for unsatisfactory progress.

A Veteran returning to TAMUK after an absence of two years or more who was in an unsatisfactory status must maintain a 2.5 GPA per semester until the unsatisfactory status is removed.

When a Veteran has had VA benefits terminated because of unsatisfactory progress and subsequently requests VA benefits for training in another program, or at another institution, additional evidence will be required to establish that the cause for the Veteran's unsatisfactory progress (or conduct) has been removed, and that the Veteran's program is suitable to his or her aptitudes, interests and abilities.

Veterans can enroll in classes if he is on enforced withdraw and VA will still pay him/her by filling out form 22-1995 & 22-8873.

TASP

Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) has been implemented to help keep students in college through early detection of deficiencies in their reading, writing, and mathematical skills.  All incoming college students with fewer than three college level hours of academic credit at a Public Texas Community or Senior College will be tested.  Students who score below set standards will be advised and placed in appropriate skills development classes.  Through remediation, many of these students will go on to perform standard college work and will graduate.  TASP will determine whether college students can move on to upper division courses.  Contact the office of Academic Skills, College I, TAMUK at (361)593-3308.

All students majoring in the Education area will be tested.

NOTE:  Consult Veterans Affairs Officer, on campus, concerning benefits on courses taken through remediation.
