Hazelwood benefits

Texas Veterans no longer entitled to educational benefits under the VA, are eligible for assistance under the Hazelwood Act, if they are not eligible for any other federal financial aid.  Hazelwood waives tuition and fees for the Texas Veteran thereby allowing him/her to complete his/her education at a relatively low cost.  Under the Hazelwood Act, a Texas Veteran is one who served 180 days of consecutive active duty, whose DD-214 shows Texas as his/her Home of Record, and who received an Honorable Discharge.

You application is available from the VA office at the Registrar.  The application must be in by the 4th class day during the summer sessions and by the 12th class day during the long term semesters (Spring and Fall).  All returning vets must submit an application once a year starting in the Fall term.  The following documentation must be attached to the application:  DD214, VA letter stating you are out of benefits (you can call 1-800-827-1000 in Houston to receive this letter), copy of your income tax return for the present year, and a copy of any old utility bill.  You must not be in default with any loans and must have been refused for any financial aid.
