Texas A&M University-Kingsville Presidential Search

The chancellor and Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System invite nominations, applications and expressions of interest from potential candidates for the position of president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Located in the heart of South Texas in the region known as the Coastal Bend, Texas A&M University-Kingsville is a teaching, research and service institution that provides access to higher education in an ethnically and culturally diverse region. Texas A&M-Kingsville offers an extensive array of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and selected doctoral programs in an academically challenging, learner-centered and caring environment where all employees contribute to student success.

Institutional Profile

Texas A&M-Kingsville is the only Doctoral/Research University located south of Austin as classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement for Teaching. A federally classified Hispanic-Serving Institution, Texas A&M-Kingsville was founded in 1925 as South Texas Teachers College, and the university was later known as Texas A&I University before joining The Texas A&M University System in 1989.

More than 6,500 students from 35 states and 43 nations are enrolled at Texas A&M-Kingsville, which offers 56 bachelor's degrees in 52 fields of study and 58 graduate degrees in 39 areas through seven colleges in Kingsville – the College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Business Administration; the College of Education; the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering; the College of Graduate Studies; and University College – and the Texas A&M University-Kingsville System Center-San Antonio.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is particularly well-known for its excellence in engineering, agriculture and wildlife science, music, undergraduate biomedical science and teacher education. Texas A&M-Kingsville offers the world’s only master’s degree in ranch management through its King Ranch Institute of Ranch Management and one of only five bachelor degrees in biomedical sciences offered in the U.S. The university also is home to several world-class research centers, including the NSF-funded Center of Research Excellence in Science and Technology-Research on Environmental Sustainability of Semi-Arid Coastal Areas, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, the Natural Toxins Research Center, the Rabbit Research Program and the South Texas Environmental Institute.

The university also offers a robust quality of campus life for its students. Home of the Javelinas, Texas A&M-Kingsville is the only college or university in the nation that has adopted the javelina as its mascot. Each fall, Saturdays in Kingsville are centered around tailgating and games of the football team, the only collegiate football program in South Texas and winner of seven national championships in its 83-year history. More than 100 student organizations on campus provide activities and enhancement for students. Residential students currently can choose from four halls in which to live. A living-learning community for engineering students opened in 2007 and three more – in wildlife sciences, music, and health and wellness – will open in fall 2008. The university also will break ground in fall 2008 on a new $4 million Student Recreation Center and plans are under way to build new residence halls over the next 3-5 years.

The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a statewide network of nine universities, seven state agencies and a comprehensive health science center. The A&M System educates more than 105,000 students and reaches another 15 million people through service and outreach programs each year.  With nearly 27,000 full-time faculty and staff, the A&M System has a physical presence in 248 of the state’s 254 counties and a programmatic presence in every Texas county.

Each of the 17 members of the A&M System has its own mission, history and goals. The oldest member institution and founding member is Texas A&M University, established in College Station, Texas, in 1876. Many of the member universities and agencies joined the A&M System decades after it was established. Together, A&M institutions strive to provide educational programs, outreach and community enhancement services as well as research that will improve the lives of people in Texas, the nation and the world.

The A&M System is governed by a governor-appointed nine-member Board of Regents. A non-voting student member was added in 2006. The regents appoint the chancellor, who is the chief executive officer of the A&M System. The presidents of member universities also are appointed by the Board of Regents upon the recommendation of the chancellor, and serve under his direction.
