The Kingsville Police Department presented officials at Texas A&M University-Kingsville with a check for $20,000 to start a scholarship endowment in memory of two fallen city police officers, Sergeant Gene Christopher and Patrolman Felix Luna Salinas. The money, from the chapter 59 asset forfeiture fund, will set up the endowment for scholarships for local students majoring in criminology; however, it will be about two years before the endowment will be ready to disburse scholarships. Kingsville Police Chief Ricardo Torres said he hopes to make a yearly donation to the endowment and would like to be able to give full criminology scholarships to promising students.
