The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System has approved an agreement between Texas A&M University-Kingsville and the Diocese of Corpus Christi that transfers land between the two entities. The agreement paves the way for the construction of a new Newman Student Center and Chapel as well as student housing and dining facilities adjacent to the campus.

Under the agreement, the university will transfer approximately five acres of unimproved land to the Diocese of Corpus Christi in exchange for improved real property at 1119 West Santa Gertrudis Street, Kingsville. The location on West Santa Gertrudis is the current site of the St. Thomas Aquinas University Catholic Center, which is owned and operated by the Diocese of Corpus Christi and serves 300 to 500 students each week.

The dining facility, student center and chapel will be built by the Diocese.

The Newman Student Housing Fund, a limited liability company formed to construct student housing for the Catholic Church, will build a new Catholic housing complex that will initially serve 150 to 300 students (with the intent to grow).

Newman Centers are residence and Catholic ministry centers at or near non-Catholic universities throughout the world.  The centers provide pastoral services and ministries to their Catholic communities, in particular to the Roman Catholic student population within the universities. However, students of all faiths are welcome to participate and often take advantage of the services available through their campus Newman Center.

While there are dozens of Newman Centers in the country, A&M-Kingsville will be one of only a handful in the nation to also include a residential component and one of the first in Texas.

The current plan calls for designs to be drawn up during Spring 2012. Construction of the dining facility, the first phase of the residence complex, and the student center would begin in late Summer 2012.  The facilities would open in Fall 2013.
