The Kingsville Symphony Orchestra (KSO) will present its third subscription concert of Season 3, The Magic of Mozart, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, in Jones Auditorium, 855 N. Armstrong, on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. KSO Music Director Stefan Sanders will conduct the performance.

The program will open with Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by Joan Tower and On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss. A highlight of the first half of the concert will be Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 performed by Luke Hsu of Katy. Hsu is the winner of the 2008 Kingsville International Young Performer’s Competition.

The second half of the program features the Overture to Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. In a special salute to the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s History Club will co-sponsor a presentation of Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait. Larry Purkey, associate pastor at Kingsville’s First Baptist Church, will narrate the excerpts from Lincoln’s great documents that form part of the orchestral piece.

This concert is dedicated to the Women’s Club of Kingsville, whose members will be admitted free in recognition of their many contributions to the community. Continuing KSO's tradition of saluting high school music groups, students from the Falfurrias High School Band, conducted by Paul Saenz, also will be admitted to the concert free. Tickets will be available at the door.

Prior to this concert, attendees also may purchase tickets for the July 4 Concert, the last of this season, and for the special fund-raiser, a Country Western Ball scheduled at 8 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Memorial Student Union Ballroom and conducted by returning director, Lee Gwozdz.
