Jose Garcia will serve as interim vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer for Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He will join the campus Tuesday, November 11.
Garcia carries an appointment as executive director for strategic planning at the Texas A&M-Kingsville System Center-San Antonio, and will continue to honor that commitment while serving at A&M-Kingsville. A&M-Kingsville president Dr. Steven H. Tallant said he anticipates that Garcia will spend three days each week in Kingsville through the end of the year, and then possibly spend more time at Texas A&M-Kingsville in the new year.
Previously, Garcia worked at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. He retired in August 2008 after nearly 30 years of service and was named vice president emeritus for finance and administration by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents in September 2008. His career at A&M International includes a stint as interim president in 1996.
Garcia is a San Antonio native and a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in numerous staff and command positions for more than 25 years. His assignments included infantry unit advisor in Vietnam, Special Forces Group in Panama and military observer in Honduras with the Organization of American States. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Candidate School, the Infantry Officers Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff Course and the Parachutists and Jumpmaster courses. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Columbus State University and is a graduate of the Governor’s Executive Development Program at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.
In addition to his military service and his dedication to the Texas A&M University System, Garcia has been active in his community. He is a past president of the United Way of Laredo and past chairman for the State Employees Charitable Campaign. He was a founding member and board member for BorderFest and former president for the Kiwanis Club of Laredo, serving as Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor for Division 26 of the Texas/Oklahoma District.
He has served as an accreditation team member for several universities with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and served as president of the Texas Association of State Senior College and University Business Officers, president of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers and as a board member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
During Garcia’s service as interim vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer, A&M-Kingsville will be conducting a national search to replace Dr. Tom Saban, who accepted a position as chief financial officer and vice president for finance and administration at Rocky Vista University in Parker, Colo.
