KINGSVILLE (November 19, 2008) — Texas A&M University-Kingsville Jazz Band I has been selected to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) State Music Convention in San Antonio Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009. The selection process is conducted by TMEA, who listen to recordings submitted by university jazz bands; the panel of judges selects one jazz band to perform based upon the quality of the recording.
The Jazz Band I previously performed at TMEA in 1995 and 2003. A recording of the 2003 performance was submitted to DownBeat magazine for the 27th Annual Student Music Awards. They won the title of “Best Big Band” in the United States and Canada for 2004. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents issued an official resolution honoring Jazz Band I for its accomplishments.
Jazz Band I co-directors are Paul Hageman and James Warth. The performance will include a world premiere of a new composition by famed jazz composer, Eric Richards. They also will be performing with and featuring world-renowned jazz trumpeter, Wayne Bergeron. Bergeron will perform the last three numbers with Jazz Band I.
In past years, Jazz Band I has performed with several jazz artist such as Rich Matteson, Jon Faddis, Arturo Sandoval, Marvin Stamm and Slide Hampton. Jazz Band I has performed at the annual Texas A&M-Kingsville Jazz Festival, now in its 42nd year, the TMEA State Music Convention (1995 & 2003), the Coastal Bend Jazz Festival, the University of Texas Longhorn Jazz Festival, the Fiesta Jazz Festival, the Texas Jazz Festival, RioFest Jazz Festival, the University of Northern Colorado/Greeley Jazz Festival, and the Mobile Jazz Festival.
