Presentations & Accomplishments
Kay Clayton (academic affairs) presented the workshop “Introduction to the Role of Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs” at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Academic Affairs Summer Meeting in San Francisco, July 27-30.
John V. daGraca (Citrus Center) delivered an invited seminar on greening in the department of plant pathology at Texas A&M University, Sept. 13.
Randall W. DeYoung and Dale F. Kane (Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute) presented research at The Wildlife Society annual national meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, Sept. 22-28.
Pamela D. Doughty (health and kinesiology) presented the paper “Applying Knowledge for Community Service” at the Third Annual Conference on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in April. She also presented “A Capstone Course for Community Health Degree” at the International Conference on Youth & Education for the 21 st Century in June, and will present at the Society for Public Health Education’s 57 th Annual Meeting in November.
George G. Gresham (management/marketing) traveled to Monterrey, Mexico Aug. 2-4 to meet with Dr. Salvador Trevino of Monterrey Tech and Dr. Antonio J. Dieck-Assad of EGADE Monterrey to seek opportunities and collaborations between the institutions.
Alejandro Lozano-Cavazos (Ph.D. student-animal and wildlife sciences) will be presenting preliminary results from his research project about grasslands birds and Northern bobwhite quail in Veracruz, Mexico, Oct. 2-9.
Lento Maez (bilingual education) attended the Institute for Second Language Achievement’s NewCommer/ESL Institute conference July 26-27, where he served as a session presenter.
Maria Morales (bilingual education) presented “The Study of the Tribal Groups Living in the Coastal Plains: History for the Bilingual Education Classroom” at the National Science Association’s summer seminar in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Aug. 6-9. She also served as chair of the Social Sciences in Action sessions.
Felipe de Ortego y Gasca (language and literature) was published in the online publication Chicano Critical Review August 5, 2006, for the article, “Con Ganas Ganas! The Fire Within.” In addition, the piece “Lies Like Truth: Discourse Issues in Language,” was published in Plagiary: Journal of Cross-Disciplinary Issues in Plagiarism, Fabrication, and Falsification, an on-line peer-reviewed publication of the Office of Scholarly Publications from the University of Michigan; a hard copy was published in Plagiary Annual, 2006. Also, he was reappointed for a third year (2006-2007) to the Advisory Board of the Mayborn Literary Non-Fiction Conference hosted by the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of North Texas.
Bruce R. Schueneman (Jernigan Library) wrote the chapter “The French Violin School: Viotti and Rode” for the book Giovanni Battista Viotti: A Composer Between the Two Revolutions, published by UT Orpheus Edizioni in Bologna, Italy.
John R. Slate (educational leadership & counseling) was published in the editor-reviewed online journal Essays in Education 17. He was co-author of the piece “Taking statistics doesn’t have to be scary: Keeping the heart rate down,” with HeeGyoung Song.
Yifang Zhu (environmental engineering) traveled to St. Paul, Minn., to present the paper “Ultrafine Particles Measured in Commercial Aircraft Take-Off Plumes @ at the 7 th International Aerosol Conference September 10-15.
Grants
Lee Clapp (environmental engineering) was awarded $29,629 for a contract with JT3, LLC, for work in reference to the proposal “Use of Membrane Delivered Ethene to Support cis-DCE Degrading Bacteria.”
Randall DeYoung and David Hewitt (Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute) was awarded $165,994 as part of an interagency cooperation contract with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the proposal “Factors Affecting Breeding Success of White-Tailed Deer Bucks.” In addition, DeYoung received $5,500 for a subaward agreement with Mississippi State University for the proposal “A Landscape-Genetic Approach to Assist Gray Fox (Urocyon Cinereoargenteus) Oral Rabies Vaccination Strategies in Texas.”
Mary L. Gonzalez (Special Programs) has received funding for year five of five in the amount of $220,000 from the U.S. Department of Education for Education Opportunities Centers. In addition, she received $222,916 from the U.S. Department of Education for year four of four for Upward Bound Math and Science, and $411,539 for year two of five for the High School Equivalency program.
Fidel Hernandez (Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute) was awarded $533,301 as part of an interagency cooperation contract with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the proposal “Testing of Sustained-Yield Harvest to Regulate Consumptive Use of Northern Bobwhite in Texas.”
Enrique Massa (biology) was awarded $697,947 from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of General Medical Sciences for the MBRS SCORE program.
Larry Peel (mechanical & industrial engineering) was awarded $71,641 as part of an intrasystem agreement with Texas Engineering Experiment Station/Space Engineering Institute for “Motivating Texas A&M-Kingsville Students through Space Engineering Research.”
John C. Pérez (biology, NTRC), Michelle Garcia (animal & wildlife sciences), Jieming Chen (psychology & sociology) and Sajid Bashir (chemistry) were awarded $839,743 for “RIMI-Kingsville Biomedical Research Program,” year five of five.
Dazhi Sun (civil & architectural engineering) was awarded $42,607 by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the proposal “In-Service Evaluation of Cable Median Barrier Performance.” Sun was awarded a two year grant in the amount of $23,774 for another project agreement with TxDOT for “Utilizing the Data Collected at Traffic Management Centers for Planning Purposes through Non-Traditional Sources and Improved Equipment.” Finally, Sun was awarded a two year grant in the amount of $72,418 for a third agreement with TxDOT for the proposal “Updated Work Zone Capacity.”
