The Cinesol Latino Film Festival will present one of their films from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, in room 100 of the Biology Earth Sciences building.
The film being shown is a comedy entitled Una Güerita. It is about Adan, a first generation college student who makes a promise to his dead grandmother to “better the race.”
This 22-minute movie was made for a college film production class. The filmmaker, Enrique Leal, wrote, directed starred-in, shot, lighted and edited the film. He did not intend to act in the film, but there weren’t many Mexican-Americans on campus to try out for the role.
Leal’s total budget was $140. It won the Audience Award at Cornell University. The film was shot on 24p MiniDV Video in color. It contains some profanity and sexual references.

As many of you know it is hurricane season in the Coastal Bend. Fortunately there are no storms in the Gulf aiming for Texas at the moment. Nonetheless, as a university community we should continue to prepare ourselves should a hurricane or tropical storm reach us sometime this season.

The Crisis Management Team would like every member of the Javelina family to review the hurricane procedures for the university. These may be viewed online here.

Each season these procedures are posted on the front page of the website for the duration of the season.

Should you have any questions, please contact Mr. Oscar Castillo at x2645. Thank you.

The SACS Scene
1 November, 2004

At its 20 September meeting, and following the timelines of its proposed Quality Enhancement Plan(QEP), the Planning Committee, with Dr. Tim Fulbright, Chair, became the QEP Advisory Committee, now with Dr. Duane Gardiner, Director. Dr. Gardiner is charged with the implementation of the QEP. In the near future he will offer a QEP website from the Office of Institutional Planning and Assessment, and linked to our SACS website.

On 23 September, the SACS Leadership Committee (SLC), Audit Committee Chairs and some Members held a general meeting to:
1) review the Certification Compliance Documentation recently sent to the SACS Off-Site Peer Review Committee;
2) hear an update on SACS activity from spring semester to date;
3) view the planned calendar for this academic year 2004-05.

Regarding #1: CDs and printed copies of the reports were made for SACS personnel and some of our SACS participants. The printed copy runs some 380 pages excluding the link-based documentation (adding that, the number approaches 1000). The report was sent out to the Off-Site Review Committee on time for the 10 September deadline. Copies of the report will soon be provided for the SLC and Audit Committee Chairs.

Regarding #2: Spring semester, February through May, was spent reviewing audit committee reports submitted in December 2003. This required a complex and lengthy iterative process among SLC readers (Bigbee, Mattingly, Rosati, joined in June by Gail Dantzker, newly hired Executive Director, Office of Planning and Assessment), the Editorial Committee (especially Nancy Nagy, Chair, and Cadi Lusk, Administrative Technology Specialist )and, at one or multiple times, all Audit Committee Chairs/their SLC liaisons. In early June, Dr. Margaret Sullivan, SACS consultant, came to campus chiefly to review our QEP but along with it, the audit committee reports. Rethinking the QEP, and reformatting the reporting style and adding substantial new data sets for the reports resulted in substantial improvement, as well as a demanding summer work schedule. Simultaneously with these activities, from late May and into July, the University responded to the SACS Substantive Change Committee’s recommendations subsequent to its February visit to System Center-San Antonio (report submitted 15 July, reply anticipated December 2004).

Regarding # 3: Major fall semester 2004 activities:
· for internal purposes only, continue to monitor and when necessary, update our SACS reports;
· review final draft of the QEP in November by the SLC;
· await the end of November judgment of the SACS Off-Site Review Committee on our report and respond as needed;
· at the SACS December 2004 annual meeting, Atlanta, present a workshop on our ( institutional) SACS experience;
· submit the QEP to SACS between mid-January and 28 February, 2005;
· April 11, 2005, host the campus visit of the SACS On-Site Review Committee (approximately 2 ½ days).

View the complete Texas A&M University-Kingsville report at our SACS website, clicking on “Compliance Certification Documentation Submitted.” Also see“Timeline” for an overview of the SACS calendar through April 2005.
