New Summer Hours
The university will implement a 4½-day summer workweek beginning Monday, May 10, and continuing through Friday, August 13. Working hours will be Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday only. Saturday and evening classes will meet as scheduled.

With the exception of the University Police Department and certain maintenance and custodial crews, all offices should plan to work this schedule. Administrative offices are reminded that they should remain open during the lunch hour as required by System Policy 33.06.

When applying for vacation, compensatory or sick time Monday through Thursday, the leave request form should indicate 9 hours for the entire day or the exact number of hours missed. For Friday, the leave request form would indicate 4 hours for the entire day or the exact number of hours missed.

The state legislature authorizes a certain number of 8-hour holidays each year. Because Memorial Day, May 31, 2004, is a Monday, it will be necessary to work until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 4, to complete the 40-hour workweek.

If you have any questions regarding the summer hours, please call 593-3704.

Relay for Life
On behalf of the Relay For Life Committee, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who participated in the Relay For Life on April 23-24. We had a very successful turnout with all the teams, survivors and guests. With the help of generous sponsors, businesses and very loyal volunteers from Kingsville, Bishop, Riviera and surrounding areas, we surpassed our goal of $100, 000, all of which could not have been reached without the generosity of these individuals.

I would like to thank all the committee members who helped this year. I would also like to thank all the team captains who volunteered their time and energy for us. A big thank you to everyone who helped us during the Opening Ceremonies, the Survivor’s Ceremony, Luminaria Ceremony and all of the entertainment throughout the night.

A very special thanks to President Rumaldo Z. Juárez, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, for being Relay For Life 2004 host. A special thanks to the Physical Plant employees for all the work they did to prepare and make this a special place for us.

And last but not least, a big thank you for being a community that takes up the fight against cancer.

Sincerely,

Silvestre “Silver” Chapa, III
2004 Relay For Life Chairman
