Gladys Hines to resign as director of University College
Ms. Gladys Hines has announced that she plans to retire at the end of May 2005; and a national search will be conducted during the 2004-2005 academic year for her replacement. Ms. Hines has been Executive Director of University College (formerly College I) since 2000. Over the last two years, University College has expanded in role and scope. As a result, President Juarez requested and subsequently received approval from the TAMU System Chancellor to change Ms. Hines’ title from “executive director” to “interim dean.” This title is effective immediately.

Over the course of her career at A&M-Kingsville, Ms. Hines has been totally committed to serving our students. Under her leadership, there has been a very smooth transition from College I, which focused almost exclusively on developmental education, to University College, which has an expanded mission. Ms. Hines was very gracious to let us know a year in advance of her plans to retire. We are pleased that she will continue to provide the experience and leadership needed to further develop University College while we are conducting a search for her replacement. Additionally, she will be able to continue to assist in the reaffirmation of our SACS accreditation.

In a letter notifying me of her plans, Ms. Hines stated that “Although I will be retiring, my love for Texas A&M University-Kingsville will not diminish!!”

New Summer Hours
The university will implement a 4½-day summer workweek beginning Monday, May 10, and continuing through Friday, August 13. Working hours will be Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday only. Saturday and evening classes will meet as scheduled.

With the exception of the University Police Department and certain maintenance and custodial crews, all offices should plan to work this schedule. Administrative offices are reminded that they should remain open during the lunch hour as required by System Policy 33.06.

When applying for vacation, compensatory or sick time Monday through Thursday, the leave request form should indicate 9 hours for the entire day or the exact number of hours missed. For Friday, the leave request form would indicate 4 hours for the entire day or the exact number of hours missed.

The state legislature authorizes a certain number of 8-hour holidays each year. Because Memorial Day, May 31, 2004, is a Monday, it will be necessary to work until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 4, to complete the 40-hour workweek.

If you have any questions regarding the summer hours, please call 593-3704.
