Fajita Sale
In celebration of the Week of the Young Child, the Center for Young Children will hold its annual Fajita Fundraiser on the center playground this Sunday, April 18, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 each and can be purchased at the Center. All proceeds go toward professional development for CYC staff. Entertainment includes Mariachi Javelina, a moonwalk and Bitsy the Clown.

Topping-off ceremony scheduled for pharmacy building

The Irma Rangel School of Pharmacy building has reached its highest structural point in construction. To celebrate the occasion, the pharmacy school will host a “Topping Off” ceremony Wednesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at the building site, located on the A&M-Kingsville campus at the intersection of Lantana and Avenue B.

Board of Regents approves changes to admission standards
Texas A&M University-Kingsville officials will incorporate the high school recommended curriculum into the university’s admission requirements beginning in Fall 2005. The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System approved the recommended curriculum requirement in March. This change is a result of a recommendation in the university’s Top 10 by 2010 study completed in December 2000. read more»

31st Annual Chemistry Olympics
brings high school students to campus

Close to 400 high school students will converge on Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s chemistry department Thursday, April 22, for the 31st Annual Chemistry Olympics competition. In this springtime event, students compete for individual honors and overall school victory in areas from calculations to crystal growing. Since the program’s inception in 1972, more than 8,000 students from 90 different high schools have participated from areas as far away as Brownsville, San Antonio and Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. read more»

TEXAS A&M SYSTEM REGENTS
ANNOUNCE SEARCH FOR CHANCELLOR POSITION

(College Station, TX) - The Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System held a special telephonic meeting today to announce they will be conducting a search to fill the position of chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. Vice Chairman of the regents, Erle Nye, will lead this search.

Board chairman Lowry Mays stated that the plan is for the chancellor’s position to be filled as soon as practical. Currently, A. Benton Cocanougher is serving as interim chancellor of the system.

The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest and most complex systems of higher education in the nation. Through a statewide network of 10 university campuses, 7 state agencies and a comprehensive health science center, the A&M System educates nearly 100,000 students, conducts more than $500 million in research and reaches another 11 million people through service each year.

American Cancer Society – Relay For Life 2004
It is that time of year again, dear friends. Relay For Life will be held here on the campus of Texas A&M University- Kingsville on Friday April 23 from 7 p.m. till 7 a.m. Saturday April 24. Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. All monies raised by Relay are used by this voluntary health organization, which is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.

Last year, our Relay raised a gross of $90,500. We ranked 2nd. IN THE STATE in county population of 30,000-35,000. We ranked 35th IN THE NATION. Not bad at all !!!

Relay is an all night camp-out filled with friends, fun, games, music, tears and laughter.
Teams made up of 10 or more members walk their laps during their individual scheduled time. Each team shall have 1 member on the track at all times.

There will be contests for the Most Laps Walked, Best Campsite, Most Spirited Team, Most Money Raised and more.

Come cheer cancer survivors as they take the first ceremonial lap, or come pray with us as we honor friends and family who lost their fight against cancer or those who are fighting this dreadful disease during our luminaria ceremony.

This year we have a total of 42 teams who have registered. There will be well over 100 cancer survivors and close to 900 relayers.

We are asking you to join us in the fight against cancer. If you would like to have a team or participate in our event or just want information, please contact:

New Summer Hours
The university will implement a 4½-day summer workweek beginning Monday, May 10, and continuing through Friday, August 13. Working hours will be Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday only. Saturday and evening classes will meet as scheduled.

With the exception of the University Police Department and certain maintenance and custodial crews, all offices should plan to work this schedule. Administrative offices are reminded that they should remain open during the lunch hour as required by System Policy 33.06.

When applying for vacation, compensatory or sick time Monday through Thursday, the leave request form should indicate 9 hours for the entire day or the exact number of hours missed. For Friday, the leave request form would indicate 4 hours for the entire day or the exact number of hours missed.

The state legislature authorizes a certain number of 8-hour holidays each year. Because Memorial Day, May 31, 2004, is a Monday, it will be necessary to work until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 4, to complete the 40-hour workweek.

Continuing through Tuesday, May 11 MUSEUM EXHIBIT entitled Preserving Memory: America’s Monumental Legacy, a touring exhibit telling the stories behind America’s outdoor sculpture. This exhibit features 20 full-color panels with nearly 200 artworks highlighted. The introductory panel features a photograph of the university’s Leaders of the Pack sculpture.
