MISS TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY-KINGSVILLE CROWNED IN SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANT

(KINGSVILLE -- February 5, 1997) -- Texas A&M University-Kingsville sophomore Tanya Lee Henske was crowned Miss Texas A&M University-Kingsville in the annual scholarship pageant held on March 1 in Jones Auditorium. She will receive a $1000 scholarship and the honor of representing the university throughout the year. Henske, 19, is the daughter of Jerry and Linda Henske of Banquete. She is an accounting and finance major.

Cyndi Barrera, 22, was the first runner-up and will receive a scholarship for $500. Barrera is the daughter of Armando and Gracie Barrera of Alice. She is a senior majoring in elementary education.

Daisy Dove was named second runner-up. She will receive a scholarship for $250. Dove, 19, is a freshman majoring in education with a specialization in math. She is the daughter of Jon and Iris Dove of Rio Hondo.

Co-coordinator of the Miss Texas A&M University-Kingsville Scholarship Pageant Raquel Sosa said, "The pageant was a lot of work. The girls put a lot of time and effort into being there the two weeks before the pageant. But it was well worth it. The pageant was very successful." Co-coordinator Mari Garcia added, "All of the girls were very helpful, and the scholarships will be a great help to these girls' educations."

Judges for this year's pageant were Dr. Gilda Lopez, director of the Women's Center; Dr. Doze Butler, associate professor in the Department of Human Sciences; Jilma Viduarri, Texas A&I graduate; and Joe Estrada, registrar.

Judges scored contestants in a personal interview conducted during the day, swimsuit competition and evening gown competition. Five finalists were chosen and were judged on their response to a question at the end of the night.
