FEBRUARY MUSIC EVENTSPLANNED AT A&M-KINGSVILLE

(KINGSVILLE, February 26, 1997) -- Opportunities for music lovers abound the last week of February at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The presentations include both vocal and instrumental groups, performing in a variety of styles. All performances are free.

The Concert Band and Brass Choir Concert will perform at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the Little Theatre. A traditional mix of band music will be presented, including the romantic first movement of "Second Symphony for Band" and "Freedom Road," a 1994 Jim Curnow piece based on the spiritual, "Follow the Drinking Gourd." The performance by the brass choir will feature a piece by Gabrielli played by three groups of musicians positioned around the theatre with the audience in the middle. Both groups are under the direction of Richard Morgan.

A piano lecture and recital by Dr. Miguel C. Leatham, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Sociology, will perform "Capricio on the Absence of His Beloved Brother." Leatham will also speak on the composition. The event will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the Recital Hall of Bellamah Music Building.

The Spring Choir Concert will feature the concert choir, jazz singers and cantus firmus at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Recital Hall of Bellamah Music Building. The concert choir will perform a variety of classical pieces including two student-conducted pieces, folk songs, a spiritual and a madrigal. The jazz singers will perform three jazz pieces and one ballad. The cantus firmus, the university's select chamber choir, will also perform a variety of classical pieces including one with the accompaniment of three trombones.

University Interscholastic League (UIL) competitions in instrumental solo and ensemble will be held from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, and from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, in the Bellamah Music Building.

A&M-Kingsville's Music Department recently received reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the national accrediting agency of college music departments. The university's music program is well-known throughout South Texas, tracing its beginnings to the establishment of the university in 1925.
