MATH INTERFACE '97 BRINGS NEW IDEAS TO HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS
(KINGSVILLE, February 26, 1997) -- Bringing South Texas mathematics teachers together for a day of dialogue to promote vitality, effectiveness and relevancy in teaching high school mathematics is the calling card that will attract an estimated 80 mathematics teachers to the 24th Annual Mathematics Interface '97 to be held by the Department of Mathematics from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28, at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
"Improved techniques and new ideas for teaching are the purpose of the annual outreach event," said Dr. Dwight Goode, chair of the Department of Mathematics at A&M-Kingsville. "It's a time for high school teachers to share information and become acquainted with new technology such as the graphing calculator."
The lack of preparation of mathematics elementary school teachers will be the subject of the keynote presentation by Dr. Pat O'Dell of the Department of Mathematics at Baylor University during the luncheon from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Room 219 C of the Student Union Building.
Featured session speakers include Julia Jackson of the Region 2 Education Service Center
speaking on "Writing in Mathematics" at 9:15 a.m. and Gerri Stanko of the Region 2 Education
Service Center presenting "Inspiration and HyperStudio in the Mathematics Classroom" at 1:30
p.m.
An update of the latest efforts by the Texas Statewide Systemic Initiative (TSSI) will be given by Susan May of the Dana Center which is located at the University of Texas. The updates will be presented at 9:15 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. The TSSI is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education that spearheads reform in math, science and technology education at the state level.
In two separate sessions at 10:40 a.m., "Teaching Word Problems from a Reading Perspective" will be presented by Dr. Marie Lassmann of the Department of Education at A&M-Kingsville and "A2CEing Algebra" will be presented by Mathematics Coordinator Dr. George Tintera from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
Other sessions throughout the day will be presented by faculty of the A&M-Kingsville Mathematics Department and will include educational uses of the Internet and using the TI-92 graphing calculator to do algebra. Each session's content will be presented and followed by a time for participant discussion.
