ENROLLMENT AT A&M-KINGSVILLE CONTINUES UPWARD SWING

(KINGSVILLE, February 14, 1997) -- Spring enrollment at Texas A&M University-Kingsville increased 1.8 percent in headcount and 1.4 percent in semester credit hours from the same period a year ago, officials reported Wednesday, Jan. 29. The figures reflect an upward trend that has continued for the past three reporting periods.

Enrollment on the 12th day of class was 5,801 students taking 66,173 semester credit hours. Last year 5,701 students enrolled and took 65,255 semester credit hours. State funding is based on semester credit hours.

A&M-Kingsville President Manuel L. Ibáñez said he was pleased with the increase. "It is very gratifying to me that in the face of decreases that are occurring generally around the country, we are showing increases. It shows that our programs are in demand and that many of our new programs are really serving the interests of South Texas citizens," he said. "We're also sustaining numbers and growth in our existing programs which are also quite popular."

Ibáñez also emphasized that A&M-Kingsville graduates are not only being placed in graduate schools but "in good jobs around the country" as well.

Enrollment figures are based on paid tuition receipts received by the close of business on the 12th class day, which was Wednesday, Jan. 29. The 12th class day for counting enrollment is set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Figures remain unofficial until certified by the board.
