A&M-KINGSVILLE PROFESSOR ASSISTS WITH 30-YEAR TRANSLATION EFFORT
(KINGSVILLE, August 27, 1996) - Dr. Earl M. Herrick, professor of linguistics at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, recently spent two weeks in Chicago assisting with the final editing of a 1,030-page anthology of Hungarian poetry in English translation entitled In Quest of the 'Miracle Stag': The Poetry of Hungary. Herrick edited the English of all the translations and advised on the book's typography and layout.
The book is being edited by Dr. Adam Makkai, who is both a frequently published Hungarian poet and a professor of linguistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It is the result of a 30-year effort by many translators. It will be published in Budapest in October as part of Hungary's celebration of the 1,100th anniversary of its nationhood and the 40th anniversary of its 1956 uprising against the U.S.S.R.
The book will be officially introduced to the public by Dr. Arpad Gonez, the President of the Republic of Hungary, who has written a forward for it.
